Hey guys. I am really interested in improving my designing ability. I just finished a course that I spent 100 hours on and maxed out memory on called Maple Pines Golf Club. I submitted to TGC but was not approved. I created the course on PS4 and felt like I just don’t stack up to the good designers.
1) I’m wondering what the best way to design is... is PC the way to go?
2) what is lidar and how do you use it? I made a few real courses by actually memory/photo and it took way too long and obviously wasn’t accurate as it could be. How do I do this??
Thank you in advance any help is greatly appreciated!

As a new designer myself I would recommend a few guys.
Crazycunuck1985 Vctrylnsprts B101 Mattf27
Crazycunuck has helped me on so many things. You can youtube tgc2019 tutorials with their names.
I am currently building my home course using google earth, it has a handy measuring tool, making it much easier to scale things. I can't help you much with lidar, I believe it copies and paste a real topographic photo into the game. Hope this helps a little.

Answers to your questions: I designed my first courses on PS4, but they were not RCRs, just made up from my mind. You can build an RCR on a console, but it can never be totally accurate as to topography. As slicermcduff said above, you tube and Twitch videos by those guys are invaluable for new designers; also go back through the entire "Designers" board and read it. As far as Lidar, you must use a PC for that. For more information go to this forum Tgc golf tools and read that. There you can also get instructions to download the Chad's tool you need to do Lidar design and a tutorial on using it. Hope this helps, and have fun - it is a pretty steep learning curve but when you get there it is worth it (at least to me )

PC seems to be the designers' choice for building golf courses, especially real ones. There are several terrific designers who have designed only on console though. At the risk of sounding conceited, I am one of those. At least I was until this week. I've moved all of my designing to PC since my recent build. The game runs much smoother on a decent system. I'm still having a little trouble with the controls within the designer (never used mouse and keyboard to navigate around the plot), but I'm getting there.
There are countless tutorials on YT that will help. Crazycannuck has some wonderful tutorials as well as Vctrylnsprts. I did a few (Violinguygolf) when TGC2019 first came out. Don't hesitate to ask questions here also. Existing designers are always happy to help.

More and more people are migrating to PC but let's not forget about jwtexan, digitalbunny, joegolferg, sindrerev, tpetro, etc. as very good designers who create courses on console. But for real courses, PC is the clear winner.
Let's not forget about how you get more 'undo clicks' on PC (ten) and any decent PC will resolve 'click' elevation changes with a lot less lag in between the old and new terrain heights, which can make it easier to improve sculpting.
Btw Violinguy69 you can use a controller with PC, many of us do (including myself). If you think you would prefer mouse/keyboard in the long run then you may still want to learn that.

Also never hurts to read a few books on golf architecture in case you haven’t. Anatomy of a Golf Course by Tom Doak is a good primer. Golf club atlas.com is also a great resource for discussion and profiles on the great courses in the world. Having the theoretical background isn’t essential but it opens up some different ways of thinking about golf courses.

I do it my own way.I'm an average designer but i'm devolping my own style..Getting started isnt easy.Laying out the route, holes stratagy and general sculpting first roughly.Tinkering with ideas as i go along. The more you do the more ideas you get. Like everyone says watch the top guys videos, that helped me get upto scratch. Focus on transitions and try and be neat. Other than that just build the course that you want to build for yourself.

First, to each their own, course design being an 'art'
I design on XBox, and admittedly kind of 'wing' it. I mostly want it to look & play like the real courses I used to play (public/muni tracks) ... every tee isn't elevated 30 feet, many a green has a run up to it, every pin isn't on a crown, etcetera. Most holes shouldn't be obstacle courses or tree tunnels. I also do NOT worry about 'drainiage' quite as much as I might on real life greens ... it's usually sunny, and even when it rains, TGC greens stay strangely dry & quick unless you choose otherwise.
That said, I tend to create a plot of land I like, pick a clubhouse spot, then route things. If I'm making a neighborhood or cityscape for 'atmosphere', I may spend time on that first, so I can make sure it's 'sensible' and still visible on some shots without panning around. I admittedly pull this off better some times than others.
I've got 10 courses out there, "Desert City Championship" is my most played course (maybe 40 rounds, LOL), but I can't say it's my own fave creation. Desert & Steppe are tough for me to work with, as is the limited foliage offered in Highlands. I wish I could use 'Swiss' and still get coastline, LOL.

Just wondering if any of you designers can help me out I’ve just started a plot for practice so I can practice putting holes down or creating different clubhouses and other stuff. I created the plot then used the red sculpt flatten brush to raise it 50 feet above the water table it’s raised it but still has the bumps and hollows on it which is fine. I decided to try creating a hole using splines. The green has flattened out the terrain a little but when I’ve put the fairway down it’s flattened it out more you can see the bumps and hollows at the side of the fairway. Surely the fairway should conform to the terrain that was already there.

Get the softest blue brush (page 4 - top line) - and click it around the edges of the fairway. Assuming you want the rough to be 'fairway elevation' - then centre it just on the fairway each time. That will give smooth(er) slopes off the edges of the fairway.

I have GEP to map out but taking across to the designer is proving extremely difficult. Thanks
