I am a new designer in this game. I have spent dozens of hours in the designer playing around with it and learning, but haven’t created anything that looks really great, or to my standards. I definitely like the fantasy, video game like feel to courses in this game rather than recreations of real courses. This is where my issue is: it’s hard to create a fantasy golf course when starting from a flat plot. I want to know how some of the best designers create scenes with huge mountains, cliffs, canyons etc. all while keeping it look natural. Please let me know any tips or advice you may have.

Raise the entire plot up by using the square sculpting brush on the last page of the landscape raise menu. Make it as big as possible to cover most of the plot and raise to your liking... the higher, the more dramatic. Then when you map out your course you can decide where you want your huge cliff views to be and lower the land beyond it back down to provide a grand spectacle for your golfers. Really you just need to give yourself ample room for open space below your holes
This type of macro sculpting is very difficult to pull off but you’re completely right, it looks fantastic when executed properly. I’m sure you know these courses already since you were inspired to make big views and elevation changes but my favorites are Hell’s Ridge, Geiranger, and Hallstatt North

To expand, when making mountains or cliffs, stay away from just taking a single brush and raising/lowering the ground 100+ feet. While this is fine to do... it’s probably not to the standard you’re looking for. Take a smaller brush, set it to between 5-10 feet and raise/lower the area in small increments for a more natural rugged look. Doing this you’re more slowly carving out the landscape you’re envisioning rather than just making a huge stretch and hoping it looks good, which it usually doesn’t.

Hi! I understand what you feel..To create an interesting course is such a challenge, especially considering the absurd standard of quality reached by lot of guys here. I'm on your same boat, right now. I'm working on my first course and i see it will be a long road to learn. But, not talking about the "technical" side of this work (cause thanks to tutorial videos and advices of every kind from all the mice guys here, to learn is actually just a matter of time, practicing and committment, after all), if i could give you an advice, if you have problems to create a course you like, is to draw the routing of your course on paper, before. I know it sounds like a big loss of time..and actually it required a full week (of my free time..so is not SO MUCH time, i mean), but for me the result really deserved the effort, cause you need just a pencil, a ruler (or, way better, a goniometer, to calculate distances and how many yards a club can reach, for strategic purposes) and then you have the chance to check, before to build it, if an idea about a hole can actually to work or not. Furthermore, depending on the routing of your course, it could be the case that every imprecision in misures could ruin your course and hours of hard work. I spent lot of hours, fighting with papers and rubber, but yesterday i started to work on the routing of my course and is fantastic to see how much smooth the work is. Another advice is to use massively the option to take measures of...everything!! I find an old tutorial wrote by theclv, about the building of his Merion East, and he explained why and how much usefuk is to embrace this routine. Of course, is a must for a not lidar real course, but is incredibly useful also for created courses! It helps me a lot. Good luck

I've made a couple courses, but in the end I was the only one who played them. I keep making a new plot and then let the designer make the holes. This is how I start, after that I change just about everything. I tried making a plot and starting from scratch, but just had no clue to how to layout the holes. Tried the paper drawing the holes before I started, but to me that just seemed a huge waste of time, and it didn't really help. I didn't just start yesterday either, my first courses were with the original TGC, which after using the newer TGC2019, I think I prefer the older version, maybe because it was slightly simpler. Maybe it comes down to who is better at it and those who aren't, just like some people are artists and some are not. It won't stop me from trying, but in the end, some people are just better at it than others.

Also, if you haven't already done so - check out the tutorials by Crazycanuck1985 on twitch - he's one of the veterans of the designer and has put together a fantastic series that basically starts from scratch and goes through greens, fairways, tees, bunkers, etc.. Give it a look..
