Pax Club vs. Jackdaw Heath
Judge 1:
Pax Club - Slopes on this course were the main drawback at is affected the enjoyability and playability of the course. The heavy planting in some areas causing lag and other areas being bare did not help with aesthetics. Waste bunker to fairway ratio was almost 50/50 and not very pleasing to my eye. Lots of technical errors, many of which could have been checked and fixed before publish. Some things were done excellent but too much was poorly executed.
Jackdaw Heath - This course was a clear winner in every category. Course was fun, made you think and looked good apart from the patchy rough, but even that was part of the look desginer appears to have been going for. Technique shown was clearly better too in what was done. Some small things that could have made the course better but I liked this course and the score reflects that.
WINNER: Jackdaw Heath
Judge 2:
Pax Club - I liked the look of this course, but the greens seemed a bit off with pins on top of little hills and funky long ridges that cut greens in two. Planting seemed rough and rushed.
Jackdaw Heath - Wow! I really liked the feel of this course. Shot options off the tees approach shot all made you thinka bit. Excellent planting and just an overall appealing course to see and play.
WINNER: Jackdaw Heath
Edora Sands Golf Club vs. La Bombia Bluffs
Judge 1:
Edora Sands Golf Club - Edora Sands is a very well constructed course with a beautiful setting. The dunes and cart path are used very well to frame each hole and the hole designs are subtle but effective. What puts this course ahead of it's competitor is how consistent and fun the whole experience is.
La Bombia Bluffs - This course has an interesting environment and some creative hole designs. Some of those hole designs don't quite work as well as others and that is enough to bring the overall experience down below it's competitor.
WINNER: Edora Sands Golf Club
Judge 2:
Edora Sands Golf Club - A well executed course which slightly oversteps the boundaries of rewarding good play. This takes it into the good rather than excellent category.
La Bombia Bluffs - An excellent challenge which rewards intelligent play within an outstanding, visually stimulating and realistic environment.
WINNER: La Bombia Bluffs
Pax Club vs. Edora Sands Golf Club
Judge 1:
Pax Club - A beautifully presented course with unique holes that all fit with the theme of the course. Fantastic green complexes that were a lot of fun to putt on and required shot planning from the tee.
Edora Sands Golf Club - A great course in its own right but lacked the same level of detail and polish as Pax Club. Shot planning wasn't quite as necessary here
WINNER: Pax Club
Judge 2:
Pax Club - A solid entry... Fairways wind their way around the course naturally and the looks are just great. May not win the competition... but a solid effort.
Edora Sands Golf Club - Another solid effort. I'd give this the nod over quite a few other courses, but when compared to its opponent in just lacks in places. Sculpting is just a hair rough for me, and some playbility issues arise. Nice course though... tour worthy and wouldn't be suprised if this got out of the group.
WINNER: Pax Club
Jackdaw Heath vs. La Bombia Bluffs
Judge 1:
Jackdaw Heath - I like this course. The combination of playability, sculpting, lighting, planting...even the rough texture just come together to make this a good one. Ths is a TOURWORTHY course. From long par 5s to reachable par 4s, ths course offers variety to no end.The sculpting is some of the most intereting on the courses I have judged thus far yet alos very fair offering :flat" lies from the fairway. The second 9 does have uneven T boxes on 9, 13 and 14 as f the designer lost some focus on minor attention to detail but it doesnt take away from what is an enjoyable round. It comes up againt a very good course in this round and it is hard to decide the winner here, if at all there is one.
La Bombia Bluffs - Another very good golf course. A tough call this round. A course that almost gets even better after the middle f the 2nd nine. This could have been a nice looking course but the planting seemed a little "dull". My senses were not quite stimilated as I played this. Some greens could offer better visibility of the course. Centre line bunkers have become a crutch off late and this course also suffer from it. Some greens seemed a little small as the green sizes do shrink after hole no 6 and 7 but it does work as the greens do match the shot required. Some option were presented off the T and on others you just needed to get as far down the fairway as possible. Hole 9 felt like a typical TGC designer hole, Centre line bunker, and uphill but thn hole 16 gives you a nice drivable par 4 with the wind and hole 18 is one of the best holes on this course.... A difficult decision to decide a winner here as both these designers have done a very good job.
WINNER - Jackdaw Heath
Judge 2:
Jackdaw Heath - This is a nice course. Missed the mark in enough areas where it's not near the top of the contest. Could possibly beat half the courses in this thing but unfortunately ran into a buzzsaw here.
La Bombia Bluffs - Great course with excellent sight lines, smooth sculpting throughout and some strategic green sculpting. Enjoyed every shot and will definitely put this at the top of my play again list.
WINNER: La Bombia Bluffs
Pax Club vs. La Bombia Bluffs
Judge 1:
Pax Club - Pax club is a fantastic effort with a lot of character. The course overall plays a little too forgiving and lost some interest for me, especially on a lot of the tee shots. Most of the course was very technically sound but, all though a tough decision, it fell short in this matchup because it all around didn't stand up to the experience of La Bombia.
La Bombia Bluffs - To me La Bombia is very close to being the Total Package. There weren't a ton of punishing hazards but the course still provided a good challenge that made you think shot after shot. It got the edge over Pax Club because the course and the environment blended perfectly and the level of detail was spectacular. Just a great golf course that also felt very real and immersive.
WINNER: La Bombia Bluffs
Judge 2:
Pax Club - A good immersive rural feeling course with challenging greens that will test your putting. With 4 par 3's, 3 par 5's and 3 short par 4's it will give you plenty chances to score low.
La Bombia Bluffs - A challenging steppe course with a good variance of hole designs. I felt it kept my attention throughout the round more than Pax Club did.
WINNER - La Bombia Bluffs
Jackdaw Heath vs. Edora Sands Golf Club
Judge 1:
Jackdaw Heath - This is a very simple course through relatively flat terrain yet it uses some thought-provoking angles, mostly well done golf visuals, and interesting green contours to hold the player’s attention. The back nine in general is quite good, and the course retains its interest for several rounds. The environment is pretty well done here: lighting is nice, there are enough but not too many trees, and planting while too sparse in a few spots tends towards ‘just right’ and minimalism. As a result, the hole designs remain the star of the show here. The texture play is quirky: it works well if you don’t pay too much attention to it up close.
Edora Sands Golf Club - This course might lose some of its terrain definition to the lighting, which detracts from most visual aspects found here. Planting scheme is quite good and generally in just the right amounts. Hole designs tend towards precision and difficulty rather than allowing the keen golfer to pick their way around the course through proper positioning, although holes 8 and 15 are very good. There were also some mid to macro-sculpting issues with general heights of certain areas, be it greens, tees, fairway sections, bunkers, or off-course areas which took away from the visual experience.
WINNER: Jackdaw Heath
Judge 2:
Jackdaw Heath - A very appealing course with a nice set up and environment, however a couple of small errors let it down against the other course.
Edora Sands Golf Club - Another very good course nice and clean with a good flow to it.
WINNER: Edora Sands Golf Club
