Work has started porting Clayton Wood Golf Club from TGC2 to TGC2019.
With Clayton Wood being my first course I designed, this is going to take some work. While the course was praised for it's design ideas, it was correctly criticised for it's sculpting and bunkering that traversed multiple cuts of grass. These major flaws will be rectified along with addressing the usual issues of fairway splines being thrown off during the port and trees, bushes and grasses appearing where they shouldn't.

1stBEFORE The first hole sees complete resculpting of the fairway. Before, the second shot was blind, but the fairway between drive landing area and the green has been lowered so this is no longer the case. Also all the fairway bunkers have been reworked though remain in the same place. The front two are there to catch out members with a higher handicap, the back two are there to catch stray shots from more skilled players. The green itself remains the same though again the bunkering has been reworked. The large bunker in the fairway to catch low shots has been made smaller. The large bunker front left has been made into two smaller bunkers while the bunker that was at the back right of the green has been taken out completely and long grass has been allowed to grow. 2nd BEFORE Much like the first, the second hole had a blind second shot. The fairway has again been resculptered to remove this, although to two mounds front left and right of the green have been kept. This keeps a significant proportion of the green blind though now you can see some of the green and the bunkers (front left redesigned and front right added) when playing your second shot. Fairway bunkers have also been redesigned and a lot of rough has been allowed to grow just off the hole. AFTER

3rd Being the silly sod that I am, I forgot to get a before picture for the third hole, which is an uphill par 3. Again bunkers have been redesigned and resculptured while more planting has also been done to improve the aesthetics. Tees have been moved as have pins, though this is the case on every hole.

At the moment I am using an early morning setting (approx 08:30) which means a low sun and long shadows. I may well have to change this to midday so shadows are much smaller and don't cover most of the greens, though the lighting effect on bunkers won't be as good. I guess this is the quandry you face when you design a heavily wooded course.

4th BEFORE Subtle yet significant changes are the order of the day on the 4th. The pond has been enlarged slightly so it encroaches on the fairway and the green just a little bit more. The green itself has been tweaked so it slopes more towards the pond. The bunkers round the green have been reworked though remain in the same places while a fairway bunker was taken out because it was basically pointless it being there.

5th BEFORE The fifth is Clayton Wood's first par 5. The tee shot is blind on this hole from the white and blue tees. I have kept this in place, though smoothed out the contouring, added a marker post and removed the fairway bunkers to make it fair on the players. The bunkering around the green has been reworked. The one way short left and the one in front of the green have been reshaped and recontoured while the three pot bunkers short left have been turned into two larger round bunkers and remain pot like in nature. It all generally looks much better while not radically redesigning the holes, which is what I have done with all five I have done so far. AFTER

6th BEFORE The routing of the hole has remained the same. I have removed some trees from the edge of the fairway to entice the player more to try and cut the corner, and I have also removed the fairway bunker that was over the fairway when the corner was cut. I have made the hollow at the corner of the fairway a little deeper and allowed the rough to grow taller. The green has had a slight remodel though nothing drastic and like all the previous holes, all the bunkers have been reworked and resculpted. AFTER

7th BEFORE From these two pictures, it looks like not a lot has changed. The sculpting has been improved again and more planting has been done to frame the hole much better. The front bunkers have been remodelled too, with the back right done disappearing completely. The biggest changes comes on the fairway. The pond to the right of the landing area has been made much bigger and now sits up next to the fairway. Anything sprayed right will find it, as will the brave who doesn't quite fully connect. A bunker has also been added to the left of the fairway around 310 yards from the back tee to catch somebody going for the big one but missing the fairway left. It's a short par 5 with a large green so even without driver it may be reachable in two. So driver may not be the best strategy off the tee.

8th BEFORE This par 3 has undergone some tlc like all the other holes in terms of the cosmetics to make it look so much better. In addition, a couple of bunkers have been removed, the remaining ones reworked and a ridge has been added to the middle of the green. AFTER

9th BEFORE As you can see from the picture, the porting has wrecked the approach to the 9th. The fairway has had to be completely redone while the green and bunkers have been reworked too. Also, a significant dip has been added in front of the green, meaning the chances of running your ball up on to it range from slim to none, and slim is packing his case ready to leave town. At 439 yards from the back tees though, finding the fairway with your tee shot will leave a lofted club in anyway, so accuracy off the tee won't make it a problem. Talking about the tee shots, the fairway bunkers have been brought in much closer to the fairway than they were prior to the redesign, making the player think carefully about whether he should try and cut any of the corner or not. AFTER The bunker bottom left of the picture is a greenside bunker on the 18th.

10th BEFORE Like most of the first nine, the 10th sees complete reworking of the greenside bunkers with some being removed entirely and also better use of natural grasses. AFTER The biggest change on this hole though is around the landing area of the tee shot. Land has been dug out to make the lake larger and bring it right up next to the edge of the fairway, which pinches about the landing area of a driver. Are you brave to take on the narrow fairway or do you play it a lot safer and leave yourself a longer shot in?
