Did they always plan it to be bunkerless? From the routing image (which looks awesome), it looks like they did mark out potential bunker spots

What markings are you referring to? I do see some dark blue looking objects. They might actually depict existing bunkers from Doak’s original design on the property. I have seen other drawings and such from C&C and it’s usually fairly obvious where a bunker is. Nevertheless, I obviously can’t confirm that but I love your observation here.

So, the annotations in the margin on the right - the top one suggests 'existing or possible new bunkers'

No, it wasn't always planned to be bunkerless. That plan was before the decision, which was made in late 2018, I believe. The only "bunkers" on site are some blowout bunkers. They aren't "making" or digging any bunkers. Those blowouts are just gonna be waste areas from what I know. The routing is still the same as that plan though

Also remember that bunkers can be used to keep you out of furthur trouble. A lot of designers will place them between the fairway and a steep hill or OB. Think how many of Pete Dye's water hazards are lined by bunkers. It's not my favorite look, but it's effective nevertheless.

it's effective...but not great. I will say that if it's done WELL it's fine. But in this game? Generally it's done poorly because of the way the elevation and sculpting is handled. I've put bunkers between play areas and water before if it makes sense... but if the water or ditch is meant to be a hazard...why not let it be a hazard? *Shrug*

I really enjoyed spending the last five minutes working out where I'd pin that first double green. Just awesome.

(The one furthest left is on the 17th tee)
