I pretty much know when my thumb is the problem. I can recognize that happening as it happens, and that is on me.
But some nights, I'll be sitting there, and hitting it perfect after perfect after perfect. And I can make it go fast or slow, and control that.
But other nights, I can be doing what I know is the exact same motions, and its all over the place, even back to back on the range, using the same club.
I suspicion all sorts of things, like my wife might be watching puppy videos on facebook, But sometimes I've been having problems, and all the sudden I get a Windows message that says 'your computer has finished scanning and you don't have any viruses!' and tempo magically clears up after that. And we all know that windows does all sorts of other stealthy stuff like downloading updates and crap in the background any time it wants.

The problem for me is i don't know what is going to happen so i am always on edge. I have no idea what kind of swing i am going to put on it despite knowing what i want to do. I am sitting here at 25 raising my blood pressure when i shouldn't be. I won't make it to 30 at this rate

Let's just hope they get rid of the tempo...just not a fan, to random for me. And I'm having a heck of a time getting a straight line when I swing. Never had that issue before in ANY golf game in the last twenty years. Just for heck of it, I reinstalled TGC 2 yesterday and guess what...straight lines on all my swings with "masters clubs" It's not me not having the ability to swing straight. I was kicking butt on the course I played...oh the memories of being good...sigh. I have no idea what happened. But when I think about it, i can't help but ask myself one question.... considering there are other people out there who are being successful. We use the same console as they do. We use the same math as they do. So why the hell do I play so badly? lol. What do those people do/have that I don't.... and where do i buy it?

TGC1 is still my most played game ever and there is a reason why and one big one at that. Relaxation. Something I need to be able to enjoy a game to it's fullest.
I need to be able to sit there and not have anxiety episodes over a bloody game. Admittedly I did lose my temper a lot on the first game but that was for other reasons and not down to how I swung the club.
I could go on and on but it would require a 2000 word essay....

This would allow players to play partial swings in order judge the distance they need to hit, as in real life. This would bring a whole new skill level to the game. Any shots hit off-line should reflect your swing plane, not receiving a slow downswing and seeing your ball fly 20 yards off-line, even though your swing was straight. You should be able to apply a certain amount of spin to the ball before playing your shot. Either topspin to keep the ball low into the wind, or backspin if you feel your shot will go long. Because of the tempo, you simply cannot apply the same kind of skills to your shots that you would play in real life. I felt TGC1 was spot-on in this area, as you could almost customise everything.

The game plays really well without the loft box, draw and fades are done through tempo and partial shots take much more skill than tinkering with the loft box. It's the only way I play this game now. My tempo has gotten much better and is really now I play the game more now my off tempo shots are ever so slightly out off the box, hitting it consistently straight I find a bit more challenging. I play the game on PC over a powerline and do get a lot of disconnects but only with this game Regarding topspin that is generally a miss hit in golf by hitting above the equator of the ball you wouldn't intentionally put it on the ball. Grip down and play the ball back in my stance to keep the ball lower is what I would do in strong winds.

As you can't move the actual ball, you would apply topspin to simulate this type of shot.

Topspin isn't a thing in golf, at least not intentionally as hammers says. Anything that isn't a literal dribble along the ground has backspin and lots of it - even in the case of driver off the tee with an upward attack angle, 99% of strikes have minimum 2000rpm backspin.

I am not completely pissed off with the tempo swing. Most of my shots just seem to bad tempo now and im struggling to enjoy courses because of this.
Worse thing HB did was introduce this type of swing but that's my opinion.

I watched a video about a week ago on youtube that shows this guy swinging straight and with perfect swings most of the time. Then found a video called the "cradle method" I think it's worth a try if you're like me and you struggled getting perfect perfect and straight shots. It really really has helped me. In fact I've been hitting it so straight I can hardly believe it. Now my tempo is much better too, but still suffer from fast fast or slow fast once in a while. It really helps with putting, because now all of my putts are very straight. Gotta warn you though...it really feels awkward for a while until you get used to it. I still like the way the thumb method feels the best, but I'm to the point where I'm trying everything. I refuse to cheat and get scripts or modded controllers or whatever else is out there...I'm too old to know what the cheaters do and don't care to know. I just want to play and enjoy the game still. I also agree with saying goodbye to tempo. I really appreciate how the top guys are able to play at the level they do because it's really really tough for me right now. Hang in there Dan!

That's interesting bassman70, I will certainly be giving the cradle method a go, I'll do try anything to eliminate the slow & fast swing, thank you for the advice, very much appreciated

“...Just for heck of it, I reinstalled TGC 2 yesterday and guess what...straight lines on all my swings with "masters clubs" ...just wait for the “updates” to kick in... Seriously, though, imo the notion of tempo isn’t a bad idea... however, the way it’s actually been implemented in TGC is less than ideal.

Hey Albert, thanks for the suggestion. There is one problem with the cradle method. I use an Xbox Elite controller and i can't really grip using the cradle method.

I may just be a middling player because i am not good at math but i almost never have tempo issues and can stay in the blue using Masters. What works for me is actually starting my "downswing" slightly before my golfer reaches the top of the swing and i am borderline having a fast backswing but am usually P/P. Another thing i do to keep my swing in the line is i mentally try to "swing" my thumb (think of a clock) to 7 pulling back and to 1 going forward. This keeps my line straight and i get great tempo. When i slip and my thumb goes to more like 12 or 11 is when i get a fast or very fast down swing.

I get slow or very slow downswings a lot and I mean A LOT. Also get other tempo problems but those two are the main ones. I don't have the patience to fix it and to be honest I don't think I can anyway because my hands are so twitchy/shaky that all my swings are mostly different from one another. I am a natural shaker so tempo was always going to be a problem. Oh and I'm on PC....
Daniel I have the same problem, I'm naturally shaky, and I get the thumb twitch at least twice a round.
But I honestly believe that tempo issues are caused by lag, server speeds, and internet speeds also. And I think it has a lot to do with where you are, and your service provider, and what all else you have running on your system at the moment you play. There is no other way to explain the fact that some people have problems, and others don't.
If time or distance were the only factor, then the exact same distance or time from start of downswing to the end of the swing, would yield the exact same tempo every time. It does not do this for me, and I have proven it. I believe that ohheycat is telling the truth, it works for them, but on THEIR system in their location. The big change between those that say it works every time, and those that have problems is internet service, lag, and bandwidth. This is exactly why I've said the tempo should be ditched in this game. There are too many factors like Internet connection that can effect the tempo where the player has no control over. Which ever way you look at it, we are not all on a level playing field.
