After a bit of inconsistency to start my season in June, I finally found my form the last two weeks. I practiced this course probably five times from the black tees, and was surprised to see we teed off from the whites. Is there a way to check that in advance, by the way? Anyways... -10, -8, -3, and then finished -13 in round four. Could not miss a putt. It was incredibly awesome to play it. I personally, did not like the course, but it wasn't my least favorite. Not a huge links guy myself. I’m not sure this is up to a “links” course. I’ve played on tour for 4 years and this is literally the worse designed tour course I have ever experienced. Not a BAD course for playing but the ugliest ever. I have to think the designer was as surprised as anyone else this is a tour course. A friend of the course picker? We deserve better My two goals with this course were to implement ideas that I really liked on Shinnecock Hills and to take "my style" (greens with runoffs, no trees or eye candy) to its logical extreme. It is almost entirely about the way the course plays, which is what I personally look for in a course, although I know others are very keen on planting and creative use of on-course objects. I am, of course, thrilled that it managed to find a home on tour, in spite of its bare look, because it means that at least someone else thought the course was interesting enough to stand on its own without the frills seen on largely every other track we play. I'm a little surprised that CC-Pro picked it up, as I had Web or Euro in mind when creating it. It's a real test of course management -- some of those pins look so enticing, but one false move can lead to disaster in an instant. That's been my favorite way to design for quite a while now, but I think it's time to recalibrate a bit now, since it's so much easier in this game to hit bad shots and put yourself in a tough spot that way. I did finally relent and put trees and other objects on my latest course. It's too early to tell if that will become a trend of mine (planting is not much fun, in my opinion). Anyway, that's my rationale behind the course. I was aware from the start that not everyone will like it, but I hope many of you can appreciate it for what it is, a different kind of test. Good luck out there this week.

I think DO hit the nail on the head about why this course was picked.... it's a different challenge than what we've presented to the CC Pro groups recently.. it's all about course strategy and picking spots carefully... similar to what the PGA is dealing with this week.

Well - He created an easy woman from my one attempt to nail her in! :-) oh - boy am I in deep trouble now?
Here is the issue - for 95% of courses US golfers rarely look at the surroundings while I have to believe most designers go for beauty which most people never see. I know I have blinders on when playing TGC for the most part.
it's all "where do I land" golfing with beauty on my peripheral. With Doubtful . . there is no peripheral.
BUT - it's certainly smooth!! :-)

OK OK - playing this week - I don't want to miss a week just for being stubborn.
Round #1 - birdied the back nine. Had an unforced bogie as the wrong club was put in my hand off the tee but now that I have been warned that won't happen again. unless it's right after a pipe full! LOL Carry on!

Tale of two tournaments (just played all four rounds at once): 65-70-63-59 to finish -31. Was -10 for my first 45 holes and -21 for my final 27.
Second round was frustrating, as I birdied the first three holes (and narrowly missed a few more putts in the first few), then doubled 8 and played even par for the last 10 holes. In round 3, was -3 coming into the par 5 6th. Was just short of the green in two, then my chip rolled all the way off the green and back down the hill on the other side. Two flops later that rolled back to my feet, and a double bogey later, was ready to throw the controller in the garbage and rage quit. Calmed down and birdied 8 out of the 9 holes on the back. Final round was more like the back in round 3. The inconsistency is frustrating, but is probably why I'm an average CC-C player!

That roll back thing is a curse that rears it’s ugly head from time to time on magnolia and it seems here also. Totally avoidable AFTER IT HAPPENS. LOL Lessons learned multiple times Hey. I’m the highest ranked player with only 1 round. Small victory OK - played round #2 - no longer the highest ranked 1 round wonder. 3rd place overall. :-)

Wasn’t going to play this week as I’m designing but couldn’t resist after all the chat I’d seen. Whilst not great on the eye I enjoyed it, every hole offered a chance of birdie but also of bogie which is hard to create. There were a couple of pins in Round three with the 187 greens which weren’t to my liking but there are every week. For a course with no frills I was that surprised that I get didn’t get bored. First time with masters clubs and shot -21 with 9 bogies, all 9 were due to my bad swings no fault of the course. The same story as every week - what could’ve been!

Can't believe I bested @bovakian, he is a fine player, designer and even better chap to chat with. This will go down as an upset for the ages!

Looks like high 70s low 80s finish (firmly in no promo no demo land) but a T4 in PC Masters. Might medal for mousers. Congrats cj1953, great scoring!

Forget that score (great score, by the way!) and show what you can do!

The rollout on these pro club long irons is insane!
