Well... I was VERY uninspired for way too long considering I was one of the first contestants to agree to this thing. I came up with the name "Treadwell Heights Club" in the shower one day (don't judge me). I thought it was a cool name and I figured that's where I would start. To be honest I've started and deleted a few course files for this already. I decided to use my course TPC Crow Run as a practice course instead of doing a bunch of trial and error. I'm happy with how that turned out so my goal is to get something done that I'm happy with. Tonight I published TPC Crow Run and didn't feel satisfied so I started on my Survivor project. Here is what I came up with and I may actually roll with this one. It is in countryside theme and is supposed to be a sort of linksy/parkland mix style course that is routed around a spread out agrarian town. Realistically I would say the setting is somewhere in Scotland, but keep in mind it is a fictional course and will be a fictional town. Here's what I came up with... Not trying to sound like a cry for help, but if anyone is willing to give me some input on the textures or overall theme of the course, I would be very appreciative. With all of my course ideas I never thought I would lack inspiration. The buildings in the pictures are just placeholders for what will eventually be a little part of the village that overshadows this hole. The village will be spread out and will be visible from lots of the holes on this course. It will include ample areas for the locals to view the tournaments (like the spectator deck I have started on). I'm pretty set on making an inland agrarian style course. I like the overall look so far. I will be updating this thread with pictures as I go. I originally wanted to be secretive but I'd prefer to be more transparent because (as a noob) I may get some tips that will help me out a lot. Stay tuned for more. I may even stream some of this design on twitch. Here is the link to my channel: twitch.tv/cib0rg_11

Hey Justin... looks like a good start to the survivor contest you have going on there.
I have only done one course so I’m probably of little help but what are you asking for help with? Is it the general theme of what you are trying to do or specifics?
Personally I’m holding back on starting mine until I can get some feedback on the last course. It hasn’t stopped me using paper though to come up with ideas as I don’t want to spend 110 hours in the designer again, I do t think I have to the 2nd time around.
I’m also going to keep mine under my hat until they are published. I want to see what I can do better and then drop it on everyone come the end.
Looking forward to what you come up with along with everyone else.

Roy, I basically am looking for any ideas people could come up with by looking at my pictures that can really make something like this shine. It could be visual or about architecture or routing. I'd also rather have it pointed out to me early if something just looks off or out of place. Being a contest course this is probably the wrong time to be seeking peer advice lol. My game plan here is relatively out of my element. I am going for a style that i have not really tried before. Hopefully I can nail the look I'm going for!

Im stuffing around with themes and different textures at the moment - gonna be a late start on this one but plenty of time Yup. Still plenty of time! If you need someone to bounce some ideas off of I would be happy to give some advice/opinions. I'm going to be the person in this survivor contest trying to form alliances in order to give/get tips lol. It can never hurt getting a fresh set of eyes on your work! At the end of the day I want all these courses to be top notch more than I care about my own success in the contest!

Hey Justin - yeah man sounds good, ive had good advice from Griffs stream today and while i knew i stuffed up on a few points already i certianly found out some other stuff and there were offers of help from lots of the onlookers so its great. I have also run my eye over a lot of courses from the great designers to undertsand transitions and sight lines etc... and with all that done....
I have now got a concept on paper with ALOT of notes - about to go to the designer and get my plan together on EVERY aspect (i like to plan in detail) before i actually start.
Im not sure if im doing a WIP thread... VctryLnSprts is there any advantage to keeping cards close to the chest or is it better to have a WIP thread so your team knows the level of quality of your course? General thoughts please?

@roytgc - great question, I'll start a pinned thread about this so that everybody might find it. I love the way you're thinking about strategy.

Question for anyone. Looking for opinions:
Do you think a 519 yard par 4 (from the tips) is too long?
The tee shot is downhill but the approach is slightly back uphill. With tour clubs it can easily be reached with Driver + 4 iron. I provided plenty of landing room for the Driver so it's a no-brainer to hit the big dog off the tee. The hole IMO plays too easy as a par 5. If I leave it as a par 4 it will likely be the most lengthy par 4 on the course. I'm not purposely adding distance to make the course more difficult.
My only concern is that if players get wind at their face on that hole they are going to be angry that it's not a par 5.
(Also... sorry Player Club users but I design my back tees with Tour Clubs for Tour Clubs so I really don't care if it plays like a Par 5 to Player Clubers.)
I'm appreciative of anyone willing to share their thoughts on this.

Nope, that’s fine once during a round of it fits the overall concept of the course. As you alluded to, just make sure the hole’s architecture supports the length.

Yep, especially in a game like this that is so very easy, 519 is acceptable. Some good advice from Eric, and I'll just add one of the more important architecture aspects in my mind is making sure all pins are accessible both from the ground and air. Having some room to run up from in front of the green is essential when coming in from 200+ yds.

Sounds like you are building a par 4.5 hole. Half par holes are a great way to break up a round. In general, whether or not you make it a par 4 or a par 5 should depend on the green design. A par 4 should have a large and inviting green, accepting long shots in. If it's a par 5, the green should be small and treacherous, and dearly punish attempts at reaching the green in two that are offline or don't judge the distance correctly. If you do make it a par 4, I see nothing wrong with the wind forcing a player to layup short of the green, and try to play a great up and down for a 4. If you judge it as a half par hole, that is still half of a stroke on the field, so the player should feel a sense of accomplishment and move on.
Then again, we are talking about virtual golf, where most players tend to think they are entitled to use driver off of the tee and to be able to attack the pin in two. You will likely receive blowback no matter what, so another piece of advice would be to ignore that blowback, as long as you feel that you have designed a fair and acceptable green.

SMH 🤔 There will always be a disconnect between good and proper course design and how it fits in a video game.

Having some room to run up from in front of the green is essential when coming in from 200+ yds. Totally agree. Also don't place bunkers directly in front of the green that may hinder this option. Offset from center is fine, just not directly center.

Thanks Mitch. Tried to watch your Twitch playthrough but it didn’t work for me.
