I'm using splines to create fairways and first cut of rough, then go back and clean up the "bumps" with added splines. Then when I get that the way I want it, I'm dragging an oval brush to create the heavy rough. When I do that, my straight edges on the first cut go haywire, continuous wavy lines everywhere! Help?

How I do this (if I care enough to worry about it) is I take a small heavy rough brush and drag it a few feet outside the edge of the rough. If you drag it to close to the rough you will see the edge change. Just do little bits at a time until you get the feel for how far away from the rough edge you need to be. Then when I have done that I make the brush bigger and work my way out to the desire width I want my heavy rough.
Be careful not to move the brush to far from the edge as this will leave a noticeable patch that hasn't been filled in with heavy rough.

This has been a glitch since TGC1 was originally released and unfortunately there’s nothing you can do without spending a TON of time laying down heavy rough. If you want the heavy rough, you’ll need to take a circle brush of heavy rough and make it extremely small and trace the outside of the first cut. It’s extremely annoying and time consuming, but HB doesn’t seem to care about it.

Glad I came across this thread—having a similar problem. I had read that it was a glitch with no workaround and then I played Gewella which has nearly flawless transitions from fairway to light to heavy. I assume Thunberg used the small brush tracing tool suggested here or might there be other methods for this?

Easiest and best way to do this, as others have stated, is to just click-and-hold/drag with circular heavy rough brush around the edges. You should aim to stay just outside of the heavy rough that auto-generates on the edges of light rough, and once you get a feel for how far away you need to be, it doesn't take too long. Just some trial-and-error to get the feel for it and you're set.

Just some trial-and-error to get the feel for it and you're set. To expand on that, the game automatically puts down a small heavy rough buffer around any light rough brush/spline. The key I’ve found, when adding your heavy rough texture is to trace along the extreme outside of this narrow band. It’s much easier to see that band if you are in a theme that has a large contrast between the rough and bare ground textures (countryside, delta, desert, etc.) Not saying you have to be in one of these themes to do it, but maybe play around with one of these themes to start to get a feel for the technique. Like BSmooth said, trial and error will help you get it dialed in. Also, I’d do small sections at a time until you get the hang of it.

Thankfully, johneric isn't making decisions for HB. There have been clear improvements to the designer for 2019, although I am not sure this particular issue is resolved.
Sounds like the improvements are in ease-of-use, but I think I remember Keith saying that there will be a way to auto-add rough around the edges of fairways.
Could have been dreaming that, though.

Unless I missed it I haven't seen any of the "clear improvements" in action...just what HB claims they've done.
I'll wait till I get the product this time around before I get any hopes up.

Keith says there's auto-fill splines with light rough borders. Hopefully, they've fixed the spline corners so you don't get kinks. Crossing my fingers for that.
