I've heard absolutely nothing from pyates in months. Last he posted he was heading off to play Roller Coaster Tycoon...not a peep since.

Haha, funnily enough I've been having a little nose in the background the last few days. Hope you are all well and that the community is flourishing I've had a busy year building up to getting married over the summer, not long back from honeymoon . I'm now using my new found time to work on some other projects. I know if I allowed myself to get sucked into this game those projects won't get off the ground. But I will surely purchase the game and get back in the designer at some point... no idea when. It might be sooner in a dip in and out sort of way, or it might be a full on dive in 3-6 months down the line. Also cannot decide which platform to use... I'll probably stick to PS4 due to my old courses and the fact that PC time is for my other projects. My perception of the game from a design point of view was that it hadn't progressed as much as I wanted... I don't know if that is the case as I've not really seen much since the game was released. How are you guys finding it? I didn't think that we were going to get the degree of freedom with object and water placement that I wanted... is that the case? Is it very buggy? Is it a massive game changer from TGC1? The way you can setup multiple pins/tees seems to be a great move forwards and should put a bigger emphasis on proper course design... is that panning out? Do you guys still have to put out 4 entirely separate setups for tournaments or can they use the 1 version? Be interested to know. ... don't sell the game too well to me, I don't need too many distractions lol

Be interested to know. ... don't sell the game too well to me, I don't need too many distractions lol Good to see your name again, brother. You've been missed. As to your questions: A) There have been some major progressions, but also some things that are a setback depending on your views.
B) Freedom with objects is a mixed bag of tricks. You can actually place water at any level you want, so that's a plus. Still can't rotate trees, but can change sizes and heights..so you can "bury" trees to get some really cool looks in planting. The Advanced Edit function for objects is amazing...opens up so many more opportunities.
C) I don't find it to be "buggy", but there are things that annoy the crap out of me. The interface took a major step back, imo. Some techniques will have changed because they don't work exactly the same as in 1...contouring and sculpting bunkers the main things that come to mind. They still work, but have to do things a little differently to get the same looks. Some people love splines, some people hate them. I personally still use brushes because it's faster for me than trying to get the kinks out of the spline edges (basically they are cart paths with fairway/rough texture).
D) The mulit tee/pin is also a mixed bag of tricks. In concept they are great, and it has eliminated publishing 4 separate courses for tour play. The problem is based on societies. If you set up a tournament for society play (which TGCT is a society), then you're locked in to 1 set of tees and weather conditions for all 4 rounds. You can use the different pin setups, but no changing tees. That I would view as a HUGE negative, but has nothing to do with the designer...that's all HB's decision on how to make societies function.
All in all, some things are better, some things are worse, some things are "wtf? you really didn't fix that?". I personally still most of my setup and layouts in TGC1 on PC, then move the course file to the TGC2 folder for finishing looks. It's just faster for me, and I can honestly get smoother looks faster in 1 than 2. The only thing you can really do to get the answers you want is to fire it up and see for yourself...the rest of us nuckleheads have our opinions, but they vary greatly.

I haven't booted up tgc1 once since release I think. Hope to see you soon Patrick. We miss ya!

Splines aren't as good as they could/should be, but they really helped me fix my biggest weakness - transitions between fairway brushes. In TGC1, I always struggled with getting nice, neat fairways. Splines do require a lot of work - mostly fixing the corners, but once I've finished, I end up with a nice, smooth fairway shape.
The advanced edit tools also are cool to play with. Again, they could be better, but just the ability to set the height of things opens up a lot more design possibilities.
Setting multiple tees and pins is a really nice feature of the designer, but the game doesn't make good use of them. They way tournaments are structured is so limited that it negates some of the course-layout creativity. It's one of those things that could be done better, and hopefully, we'll see it someday.
All in all, the TGC2 designer is a big step forward in a lot of ways, even when some things could have been done better.

Cheers for the advice guys. I also saw the TGC1 vs TGC2 thread and it seems that most people agree that whilst TGC2 isn't better across the board, it is all in all moving forwards. There are further developments on my side. My wife knew I had been debating getting the game and bought me a copy on PS4 as it had appeared in the sale and was on the verge of going back up. Fired it up last night and to be honest was a little underwhelmed, as I had kinda felt going in. I played a round which tbh I really enjoyed (props to the designer of the course I played... can't remember the name but will look it up later), the game played reasonably well with just the odd wild shot that I wasn't sure I had hit any different to my other perfectly good shots. Was on tour clubs though and was pretty happy with the actual game side of things. The disappointment for me was the the designer. All of the new shiny stuff feels like it doesn't quite do what I want. I love advanced edit tools... but everything I've tried it on seems restricted in amount of movement, such as rocks only rotate in the 1 axis and we can't scale them . Also water is amazing for putting ponds/lakes where you want rather than at 0 but rivers... oh man the rivers I want to build. But soft meandering rivers seem out of the question. No tilting at all . I can do a raging rocky waterfall river but there are huge black out spots where I have water edged out by rocks. Plus to get it looking awesome I feel will need more of the waterfall effects than I should put in if considering the plant meter and frame rate. All in all, I've only had an hour or 2 with the game proper (I did also participate in the beta). And clearly courses are appearing that are a level above what TGC1 could achieve. I feel like the game is moving the in right direction and that HB will continue to make things better. But for now I think I'll stick to my plan to keep things casual whilst I wait for designer updates... at least until a design contest sucks me in and consumes all my time (I will try to resist, lol)

The Invicta is coming mid-November...you know you can't resist that one.

Scale the rocks (trees, plants, etc) before entering advanced edit, and your scaling will hold. It's not an ideal solution, but it works. It would be awesome to get full 3-axis rotation on objects
I think the tilting/full rotation was nixed because of the physics engine, so hopefully HB will figure that out.

I'd love to see Rich Banker's The Breakers in TGC2, absolute favorite fictional course of mine from original. He also had a few others that were great too in Gator Hole and Spartina IIRC.

Hi Pyates. Royal Brumby still the best links out there. Hope you can get round to putting it on TGC2 sometime soon!
