We have all done favorites/underrated but now it is time for the dreaded overrated label. The catch is the song has to older than 1995 as many of us have similar gripes about a plethora of modern music.
Here's my top 5.
5. Led Zeppelin- Stairway to Heaven 4. Abba- Dancing Queen its an annoying song that is vastly overplayed. 3. Journey- Don't Stop Believing- I like this song but it is well over used and it isn't even in their top 5 best songs in my opinion. 2. Lynyrd Skynyrd- Sweet Home Alabama- Just too much in my opinion. 1. Queen- We are the Champions- Not one of their best tracks and it is one of their most played. In fact, I don't think it belongs in their top 10. They are one of my favorite bands, but they have a myriad of better tracks.

A personal preference thing indeed...
Rather than particular songs I will go with artists (overrated) Eurythmics (Airik I forgot about them - but cringed every time one of their songs came on - more so than any other band) U2 (I know, I know, they were Gods to most people, but I never "got it") Kiss (the outfits were cool for a while, but listen to the mixes on most tracks before 1980 - sounded like crap) Dire Straights (Money for Nothin was ok - but otherwise, very meh! Guns & Roses - 2 good songs, but otherwise, just noise Poison - 80's hair band that just made me want to barf
I lost my "V" to Journey - Open Arms - so I will never criticize them - have ALL their albums - even the stuff before Steve Perry Led Zeppelin - Partied to so much of their good tunes - but there were so many more tunes from them I just said WTF!!!! The Cars - OK, maybe not the best group in the world, but a lot of teenage party memories there. Cheap Trick (At Budakon) - OMG I did all the good things teenagers do with them wailing away in the background Steely Dan - Love them to this day. This is my go to band for critical listening. All the songs have stupid lyrics, but the musical composition behind them to me is borderline genius. The Doors - Without a bass guitarist - they sound like a transistor radio - and very obvious in their later works that drugs were too much an influence, but was always fascinated with the frailty of Jim Morrison and his tragic life. So I listen to them still.
OK, I am done showing my advanced age...

I'll go with artists too...here's my list of overrated artists: 1. The Killers/Maroon5/Imagine Dragons. I combined 3 similar sounding crap bands into the #1 slot. Ear bleeding bad. Never understood why popular 2. Nirvana. Most songs don't make sense...most have crap riffs. 3. Red Hot Chili Peppers. Do we need 10 albums of songs about LA? They all sounds whiningly similar too 4. Prince. He's been dead long enough now I can say his music was not my thing...right? 5. Drake. No explanation needed

That means I need to replace my #1 and #5: * Tom Petty- voice was weak, songs were radio friendly crap. * Meatloaf - Opera rock not my thing

I can see your side of it totally, but I lean the other way.

Hands down the most overrated song of all time is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen Bohemian Rhapsody isn't overrated, it's kind of like Tom Brady, one of the greatest if not the greatest all time so therefore, no way of being overrated.

With or Without You - U2 - EVERYONE loves this song. I can't stand it. It's a snoozer. U2 is one of the greatest bands from the 80s, and this song is easily its most recognizable, but it's also completely dull and unlike most of U2's early catalog.
Imagine - John Lennon - Another one of those songs EVERYONE thinks is awesome. I don't hate it, but it's still a snoozer. There are some progressive (socialist) ideas expressed in this song, and the lyrics transcend time. But I can't listen to it more than once without falling asleep.
Wonderwall - Oasis - Oasis is one of the worst musical acts ever. People love them, and especially this song. I am perplexed.
Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd - Maybe it's because I not from the South, but I don't get the allure of this song. The opening jingle is catchy, but the rest of the song is ordinary.
Enter Sandman - Metallica - Metallica is easily my favorite band of all time, but that doesn't mean they don't have some clunkers. Not only is this song not nearly as good as much of the band's catalog up to that point, but its success pointed them down a path of mediocrity from which they have never completely recovered. The next song that followed Metallica's trademark song style and structure would not be released for another 17 years.
