That's more of a cartoon than a sitcom... ? Sitcom stands for situational comedy. That's exactly what The Simpsons is...

Not trying to be technically correct or anything, no reason to be an a-hole. I was just saying that sitcoms aren't usually animated.

I voted for none of the above too. from the 80's and 90's for me, if I had to pick three would be 1) The Young Ones 2) Blackadder 3) Father Ted Never really been into American sitcoms. The ones that I really like are Soap, which is from the 70's and Curb Your Enthusiasm, which began in 2000 EDIT - I just read started in the 80's. I'll swap Father Ted for Only Fools and Horses then

You shouldn't swap Father Ted for anything
Going back even further I absolutely love Rising Damp (1970's) - despite the fact it pre dates me by more than a decade

The only one on that list that I would and did care to watch regularly is The Golden Girls. Have the series on DVD. I watched some of the others occasionally and some not at all. Not going to take the time to think about what non-poll stuff I did watch.

The poll is a touch American-centric. But great subject matter UK 80's - Blackadder hands down (season 2 onwards). Only fools and horses early seasons also, but a bit mainstream/lowest common denominator for my tastes. There were some obvious other highlights - The Young Ones and Yes Minister (the show that made The Thick of It possible) to name but two. UK 90's - Father Ted!!! Brass Eye/The Day Today. Alan Partridge. Drop The Dead Donkey (the first sitcom to use the current weeks news events as source as far as I'm aware). US 80's - I spent sooo many hours watching Married with Children at some ungodly hour of the night/morning on UK TV. US 90's - Frasier. Can't think of many others that hit with me. Personally think UK drama can't hold a candle to US drama. But conversely, US comedy can't hold a candle to UK comedy - we've got a rich deep vein of it from Monty Python to The Thick of It. I've had this discussion with a number of American friends who seem to agree.... but agreement with friends is a bit self selecting! There are exceptions to this of course - Louie is a fairly recent example of great US "sitcom".
