Can capitalism sustain itself for the rest of eternity, or is communism inevitable whether we like it or not? As a fully automated economy creeps up on us at a frightening pace, is there a solution for capitalism to coexist with full automation? This question has had me in deep thought all week, would be interesting to get other's thoughts on this.

Nothing lasts for eternity, not even stars or even the universe itself.

Like Bob said; nothing lasts forever. Real capitalism does not exists, capital markets come close. Communism isn't what happening when there is full automation. No work force is needed, these (ex)workers have no purchasing power so why should the owning class produce for them? Because they are hungry? 'F*ck them' is the real capitalistic reaction, 'i'm not a socialist'. Capitalism makes mankind grasshoppers. We roam the earth for products but we are destroying it in the process, until there is nothing left. So yeah, maybe capitalism maybe the last dominant system which humans use before we go extinct.

I'll be long gone before I need to worry about this.... lol. I'm thinking I probably will too, but the speed of technological advancement today is unreal. This dilemma could hit us sooner than we think.

This dilemma could hit us sooner than we think. Not fast enough for me to worry about. I hope to be retired within the next 5 years and observing it all while I relax and play video games

Yes it will as long as mankind is around because we all have to barter whether it be money or goods or minerals. There will always be someone who wants to be top dog. Animal farm, George Orwell, is a classic example.. Trading has been around since mankind came along.

No
The earth is around 5 billion years old
Mankind as we know it is around 50k years old
Europe is around 1000 years old
USA is 240 years old
Nothing of those will last forever. Perhaps the earth. Every single human way of govern, or power or whatever you want to call it has disappeared. The capitalism will disappear, the communism will disappear. The United States wills disappear. And new things will appear. I don't know what, or who, or when, or where, but this system will be gone.
The romans used to say "Cum Roma cadet, mundus cadet" which translates like "When Rome falls, the world will fall". Well, Rome fell long time ago, and the world kept evolving. Every single ancient civilization has disappeared. Usually erased by some new stronger civilization.
Every single civilization has considered itself the highest posible point in the social evolution of mankind. And every single civilization has been probed wrong. The world we know nowadays will also be proved wrong.

At some point we need to forego the tribe mentality (populist/nationalism) and realize we have always been from the same tribe... the human one.
In the words of one of my most favorite historical people of all time Ben Franklin, if we don't hang together we will surely hang alone.

Until you can eradicate egoism, capitalism will live on.
