There are so many songs all over the history, picking only five could be hard. A few favourites of mine, either I like them or I consider them best of the best ever Satchmo - What a wonderful world Queen - Bohemian rhapsody The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the devil Led Zeppelin - Stairway to heaven, Whole lotta love Pink Floyd - Another brick in the wall Aretha Franklin - Respect Nirvana - Smells like teen spirit Metallica - One, Master of puppets Sepultura - Roots Pantera - Cemetery gates Slayer - Raining blood Suicide Silence - You only live once Chimaira - Six The Animals and Walls of Jericho - The house of rising sun (two different covers) Korn - Freak on a leash Deftones - Back to school Hamlet - Perdóname (Spanish metal band) Lamb of god - Ruin Whitechapel - Section 8 Thy art is murder - The purest strain of hate Hora Zulú - Mis Barraqueras (Another spanish band) I could go on and on but... Wow, what a diverse list you have there! I like it, especially toward the middle. Might have to check out some Spanish metal bands... \m/ Been mulling this over a bit the last couple days; hard to pick just five, though: Gojira - The Way of All Flesh Meshuggah - Dancers to a Discordant System Slipknot - Metabolic System of a Down - Holy Mountains Tool - Lateralus

I left quite a few bands and songs in the pocket Great band Gojira, saw them live a few years ago in the Resurrection Festival in Spain. That was intense. I think you will like hamlet better than hora zulú as these are a bit more nu-metal oriented, but their lead guitarist is also a great flamenco player and man, that brings a different dimension to their sound

Can't believe Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers didn't crack a mention anywhere! I mean seriously??? You missed him on my list on the first page. "I Need To Know - Tom Petty"

Some pretty good lists so far!
I tried to give this a go but found it almost impossible to narrow down to just five so I've included some honourable mentions and I definitely left out loads more!
Top 5: The Beatles - I'm Only Sleeping Metallica - Blackened Arctic Monkeys - My Propeller Queens of the Stone Age - I Appear Missing Them Crooked Vultures - Reptiles
Honourable Mentions: Daft Punk - Face to Face The Last Shadow Puppets - Aviation Chic - Le Freak Deep Blue Something - Breakfast at Tiffany's Red Hot Chili Peppers - The Greeting Song Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister Dead Kennedys - Holiday in Cambodia The Beatles - I'm Looking Through You Green Day - The Judge's Daughter Ramones - Pinhead Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower Megadeth - Holy Wars... The Punishment Due Slipknot - Psychosocial Alice in Chains - Would? Avenged Sevenfold - Paradigm Rush - YYZ (nearly forgot this somehow, one of my favourites!)

After seeing a bunch of songs I forgot about that I shouldn't have forgotten about, and also thinking more about order, here's my updated list-
1. Imagine by John Lennon 2. Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen 3. In The Air Tonight by Phil Collins 4. Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen 5. Come Together by Beatles
of course 5 songs is really impossible, so let's keep going...
6. Sweet Dreams by Eurythmics 7. Kids by MGMT 8. Goodbye Stranger by Supertramp 9. Carry On Wayward Sons by Kansas 10. Smooth by Rob Thomas and Santana

Not so much my top 5 songs but these are 5 songs that always take me back to a time and place in my life.
Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star
My favourite childhood song
Danny Elfman - What's This?
Tormented the life out of my wife with this when we were first me. To this day when we hear it, I just give her a knowing wink and smile.
Alabina & The Gypsy Kings - Ya Habiba Yalla
Takes me back to fun nights out back when we were living in morocco
Charlie Daniels Band - The Devil Went Down to Georgia.
Again a favourite from my youth, and I knew I'd met the right woman, when this came on the radio and I said to her "you'll not know this one", only for her to then recite the lyrics word perfect. She was only 19 years old, and born about 10 years after the song charted. Turned out her cousins were In a band and this was their signature song.
Tears In Heaven - Eric Clapton
When I first heard this song and realised the story behind it, my admiration for the bloke went through the roof. Don't know how he wrote it. Almost reduces me to tears when I think of my kids
Anyway enough of my waffling

Wow, TreeWood -- you and I have very similar tastes in music!! I tried, I really tried...but my list would be well over 100 songs, can't whittle 'em down!! One I would add to your list: Head East - Jefftown Creek (live)
