Fun topic.
I found The Golf Club game right near the end of Early Access. It had been years since I'd played video game golf. I used to be pretty heavily involved in The Tiger Woods Community back when the game was made for PC. Used to design courses and run ladders etc. Always loved it but the long hiatus was partially due to waning interest and more so because they stopped making the game for PC.
Upon finding the game, I really loved it. I started designing and posting over in the HB forums where one day I saw a post from Tim looking for a web developer. I almost didn't respond because I have a habit of turning my hobbies into work and I didn't want to do that again. But I decided to hear him out and when he presented his vision, I was excited about it. It all hinged though on Doyley agreeing to be the tour manager. I told Tim that if was able to get Doyley in, I would be in, but without him, we were lost. Tim certainly agreed with that. Fortunately for all of us, Doyley was in and the wheels were in motion. You all have no idea how vital Doyley really is to this whole endeavor. He really is the cog that keeps this thing going. Sure, we couldn't do it without Tim, but Tim would be the first to tell you that Doyley is the one that is always looking ahead and making sure things get done.
Those early months were difficult. Tim and I were trying to think through everything that we would need from a web platform. Creating something out of nothing for an end result that would evolve over time. It was a challenge and in those months I can remember thinking that it was way too much work. When we finally launched in December, we already had more members (from pre-registrations) that we had thought we would ever have. It was pretty clear that the work was going to be worth it, but that there would be much work ahead.
It was mentioned that Job Fickett was a big help to us with writing bylaws and planning out the course submission/acceptance process. In those early days, Job was personally reviewing every single course! Can you imagine? And not just a rubber stamp review...he literally wrote paragraphs about each course. Job is still around. He lurks but doesn't post much. He'll be back one day, I'm sure. One of the top designers around, to be sure.
There have been so many that have helped along the way. Too many to name. It has become a real community effort. I don't need to tell that to those of you reading this. Still, a lot of our members (perhaps even a majority) don't even visit these forums. We still to this day get tickets from people who think we created the game itself. In some ways, that is quite an honor. In others, it is sad because they are really missing out on the best part of this whole thing...the community! While it isn't always peaches and plums here in the forums, you can look no further than the dozens that offer their time to keep this thing going. Or the generous contributions the community has made to the charity event.
It has been a tremendous ride!
