I rate courses purely on my enjoyment of the courses. Difficulty doesnt matter to me. Design and visuals are nice added experience for me but the playability and enjoyment are the main things my rating is based on.

I'm with Smurf. If I liked a course I'll rate it pretty well. If I liked it and it really stood out in design I'll rank it GREAT. If I liked it but it was rough around the edges...I might knock it a little.
Honestly unless I HAVE to I won't finish a course that I wouldn't rate at LEAST a 7... So.. you'll not see a rating lower than that from me because I won't finish the track. Yes I'm that guy. sorry.

I'm also with both of you, Smurf and Reeb. If a course isn't fun, but it's challenging, that's like the worst of both worlds for me. But my scale of how to rate a course is based on playability, visuals, and obviously enjoyment.

It's be interesting to see how some of the courses are rated by the TGCTours community. I'd love there to be a rating you'd have to give upon signing your round 4 scorecard. This week at Legacy Point for instance I would have given a 5. Looked great but the conditions were out of hand for the slopes of the greens. Coulda/shoulda/woulda been better.
Anyway, we've all got our own opinions on what makes a course great. Personally, tough but fair is my motto. Nothing bores me more than an easy course. However nothing is more frustrating than a course that is too punishing to half decent shots (see: Legacy Point). It's a fine line. The fluff is added bonuses on top.

I played a practice round on The Legacy TGCT R1 edition (so I practiced this week's first round) and I gave the course a 9. I just can't overlook how breathtaking the course is from an aesthetics standpoint, as the sculpting is exceptional.
There are a variety of holes that use the elevation extremely well, and the thought required for each drive keeps you on your toes throughout the round. There are some playability issues, but they can be overcome within the confines of this game (we can debate realism elsewhere), as evidenced by the host of scores coming in well under par.
What I'm looking at while rating the course is a few things: - How does the course play? ------ Is it intentionally difficult? ------ If so, how is difficulty achieved? ------ Do I like this kind of a challenge? ------ Is there a variety of tee shots and approaches? ------ Is there a variety of green complexes? ------ Is there a variety of pin placements (pin in front/back, top/bottom tier, etc) ------ Is there a variety of putts (double-breakers, swingers, gentle slopes, etc) - How does the course look? ------ How well done is the sculpting? ------ Are the any exciting vistas? ------ Is the planting interesting? ------ Are various colors brought into the design? ------ Does the designer "mix it up" with all the planting, or does every hole look the same? ------ Do bunkers cross multiple textures? ------ Are bunkers presented to the golfer ------ How do the transitions between surfaces look?
I don't look at whether the designer used a single shape to create his greens or fairways. To me, that's nit-picking. Now, if the designer uses the same shape over and over, then that will detract from the overall variety of the course. I also don't care whether the light/heavy rough transition is wavy or if the cart path has those unnatural kinks. These are flaws in GNCD. I know there are ways to fix or avoid these issues, but not spending the time to fix these doesn't make me think less of the course.
Rating a course is an extremely subjective task, and there really isn't a right or wrong way to do it. There isn't a right or wrong importance to the factors that make up a great course. Luke gave The Legacy at Cape Point a 5, citing the playability of the course as a major factor. I gave it a 9, citing the sculpting, bunkering and the amazing views.
I've actually given a course a 1 rating before. The course was auto-generated, and then some sculpting was done that actually made the course worse than what the GNCD had created in 3 clicks.

Erics Rating System
1-5 - Could not rate because I failed to finish all 18 holes.. 6 - Course sucked ---> surprised I finished it.. 7 - Good course but not very clean and kind of boring.. 8 - Great course but not adding to my favorites.. 9 - Excellent course - Has it all - Loved it.. 10 - Top Shelf - Instant Favorite

Only 8-10s I usually replay on my own outside of tournaments.

This will get me tons of hate but my system's not that scientific.
If I finish a course and I feel satisfied it was worth my time, it's at least a 6. If I can remember a few places where I felt challenged in a good way with my shots, at least 7. If I can remember certain design aspects that caught my eye in terms of playability and not beauty, at least an 8. If I actively think of how much fun I had playing it, at least a 9. And if I want to play it again, I give it a 10.
Anything other than I usually give a 5. If it's totally unplayable, I'll go lower, but I at least give the 5 for effort if it's a decent course but didn't leave me feeling like it was worth my time to play all the way through it.

@ Irving You left the door wide open, but I wont bite this time Well, that would be nice for a change, because the last time you left it took two weeks for the marks to heal...
