Christmas was not a happy affair for me. On Christmas Day, I took a walk to try shake some of the cold from my body, I found myself on web.com street. I guess the warm glow from the lights, the happy sound of children's laughter attracted me. I could not help myself, I peered into the window of one of the houses to see Dean Huddleston and his brood opening their gifts. The shout of delights are brand new Newcastle jerseys were discovered, each with a name beautifully engraved on the back. All except for one, this person must have been on Santas naughty list as he found a Sunderland jersey. The mocking jeers brought a hint of jealousy to mind. Oh how I wished I had a Sunderland jersey to be mocked and jeered as well. I moved onto another house, to see Kenny Woolley and family sitting in front off a open log fire, all dressed in their best kilts and blue face paint as grandpa Woolley played Flower of Scotland on the bagpipes. They looked so warm, so cosy, it made the cold outside feel more biting, I moved on. The snow on the road had turned to a muddy slush and when Chris Lewis sent mud, ice and stones into my face as he tore past me on his new MotoGP bike, I knew it was time to head home to my shed and the turkey sandwich that waited for my Christmas dinner. I was lucky this year, my second place finish earlier meant I could get both bread and meat.
When I arrived at my shed and opened the door, I saw a white envelope with the tgctours logo on my straw floor. What could this be? I dreaded being kicked out of the challenge circuit because of a number of incidents of strong language but as I read the letter, my heart jumped for joy. As a Christmas gift, a number of random of challenge circuit players were being invited to play in all the 2016 majors. My heart jumped for joy, even if I finished last, I would make some money, maybe enough to put glass in my windows, with some left over to be able to buy butter for my sandwiches. There is a Santa after all and his name is Doyley. I wanted to kiss his signature, as I moved my eyes to the end of the letter, I got confused, it did not say Doyley, it was signed web.com boys. I was victim of another prank.
As I contemplated who hard it was to be a challenge circuit player, I decided to focus on the positives. One thing we on the challenge circuit don't have to worry about is difficult courses. We don't have to deal with firm conditions, fast greens, we have it easy. I looked at the Callander to see what next course we have on tour, Yuchi Valley, sounds like a gentle stroll through a beautiful sunlight valley. While I do not tee off until Monday, I am starting the spoilers thread so you can all post your reports on your fantastic bogey free, birdie fest rounds from the four days, good luck all.

I've played three of the four rounds so far, and I like the course a lot, especially the par fives. I'm still trying to work out how to play two of them, however, especially the last hole - it might be a case of replacing one of my clubs with a chainsaw with the way some of those trees are positioned! But seriously though, I'm enjoying the challenge (after all, that's the name of our Tour eh?).

I only played a couple of practice rounds here, both on the Sunday tees and both round were not great, so I have been looking forward to the challenge. As anyone that reads my posts will know, I am one of the players that calls for harder courses, so let's see what happens on round one shall we. I had a choice on the first hole, play smart and lay up, go for the green and leave myself with a impossible putt. The choice was obvious, with birdies going to be hard to come by there was only one thing to do, go for the impossible eagle putt, which I missed by a distance, I also missed the birdie and par putts, the fun had begun. I had a straightish long putt for birdie on the second but it would not drop, it was half a chance more than a full chance but I will still call it a miss. The third hole brought a horrible downhill putt, stopping the ball was going to be a issue, I got the line right but the speed wrong, just that little bit to fast, it hit the cup and hopped over. This did cause the ball to slow down enough for a easy par. The par five fourth brought the lay up or go for the green dilemma again. I suppose I should stop calling it a dilemma, if there is even the slightest chance I will make the green, I am going for it, I found the bunker. This time though I did make birdie, a good bunker shot left a tap in putt, back to even par. The next couple of holes became a game of inches, two birdie putts inches short, bad play or bad luck? Well they were difficult putts so I will go with bad luck. And that's the way the rest of the front nine played out, close but not close enough, sadly one of those putts was for par so one over after nine.
The back nine started with a putt finally dropping, was my luck about to change? Unlikely but at least I was back to even par. Because of the wind, there was no chance to go for the green in two on the eleventh, so a easy birdie followed. Just proves my point that laying up is boring, sure it helps the scorecard but does take away the drama. Something unusual happened on the next hole, I got my maths right, I play mainly by feel but I do use basic maths to get a rough idea for distance, I don't try to work it out to the precise distance, I don't have enough fingers and toes for that. Maybe if I was some sort of freak mutant with extra appendages I might but since I was not born in a radiated wasteland like Dublin, I am just a normal little boy! Anyway, I hit the flag, tap in birdie. When I was in school, the chances of me getting two maths problems right in a row were slim and that proved to be the case on thirteen, I did not just get it wrong, I got it so badly wrong, that I if I was still at school, I would have been kicked out of class and sent back to kindergarten to learn how to count again, I wish I was a mutant now, they have it so easy. The next time time your watching golf on tv, keep a eye on the top players, they must have extra fingers and toes, back to one under. I decided to be clever on the next hole, to play into the wind as opposed to with the wind, I was shocked to see I got it right, tap in birdie. My first par of the back nine followed before I got everything right on the sixteenth. Tee shot, approach and putt all went where I wanted them to go, three under. I managed to putt of the green on seventeen back to two under. I closed out my first round with par after recovering with a bunker shot, two under my final score.
Well that was fun, some good golf, some bad golf, six birdies and four bogeys brought plenty of entertainment. What was really nice was to play eighteen holes. I have been playing a lot of match play lately, being picked on by web and euro tour players, and rarely see the whole course, so it was great to finish a round. I want to say one thing before I go, I for one, welcome our new mutant overlords( can't be to careful, never know who's reading this).

65 ( -6 ) for first round. Not bad but I missed some easy puts. With low winds seems that the second day will be the key of the tournament for me.

A better start to round two with a birdie on the first and yes I did go for the green in two. I just putted a bit better this time. I followed that with par before birdie on the third, so after three holes I am the same score as the entire first round. I suppose that can be called an improvement. Damn I am getting better. Came so close to eagle from a bunker on the fourth, just a foot or so short, three under. My putter then went cold, putt after putt missed, some easier putts than others but all birdie chances. I made one good putt on the ninth but that was to save par. Five pars in a row is not great, still better than yesterday I guess.
A putt finally dropped at the start of the back nine. I was playing steady which has to be a improvement but I was not taking chances. With calm wind conditions, I should be putting a few more yellow numbers on the score card. I honestly think I play a bit better when its windier. A chip in eagle on eleven did give my scorecard a major boost, I played the hole well and it was a good reward for getting it right. When another birdie followed my round went from steady and average to being potentially good. It would all come down to how I finish out, which Dan Sheehan was going to turn up. On the thirteenth, it was the just missing putts Dan Sheehan. I went eight under on the fourteenth, it had nothing to do with putting, a great approach gave me a tap in. I went back to par mode for the next three holes, no clear cut chances so I can't be to disappointed before I brought my score to nine under on the last.
A strange round, a decent score, bogey free but yet I did not feel like I played well, nor did I play badly. Still I will take that score any day of the week, have fun all.

Decided to play through round three while I had the time. Went one better with a bogey free ten under. Felt I played a lot better and yet just a one shot improvement, it's a funny old game. Round four will have to wait though, Sunday can be scary here, have to work myself up to that.

Second round -10 with 11 birdies and a late bogey. Definitely I play better if I play the rounds on different days.

Thanks Pablo, when I finally put four rounds together, I will have every chance. Can I skip the web and go straight to the euro tour? Some people on the web might make life hard for me there.

They should allow you to do, but also going to those people's gardens and pi**ing their flowers might be nice.

Very good Dan!! It was the wife who got the Sunderland top, I'm pretty sure she's on the naughty list because of complaining about my time on TGC and constantly talking on back swings. If you're lucky I might donate some Paxo to you next year to go in your sandwich. Now believe me when I say I didn't write that letter, simply because I've been far too busy!
