Potomac Country Club is my Us Open entry course for TGCTours.com. The greens are fast, but the firmness is set to hold shots. The course requires you to learn the slopes of the greens to know where to place your iron shots, giving you the best chances at birdie. The bunkers are over run with long grass, hopefully helping with the US Open feel. Landing zones are narrow, but not too narrow.
Hole names and tips to playing them:
#1 "Washington" is a 487 yard par 4 that has a fairway that snakes through bunkers down to a peninsula green. When hitting your second shot in to the green make sure to club down allow for the ball to feed back to the hole.
#2 "Ulysses" is a 204 yard par 3 down hill over lake "Tecumseh" to a green surrounded by bunkers. Take one club down and aim for the front of the green. Green slopes from back to front left any thing long will have a scary putt down he hill.
#3 "Sherman" is a 644 yard par 5 that runs parallel to the Potomac river. Off of the tee you will see the signature leaf bunker, that will need to be carried to give you a shorter par 5 to navigate. The safer option is to take a 3wd to the left of it, doing this will give you a much longer 3rd shot into the green.
#4 "Tasker" is a 206 yard par 3 slightly up hill and to a bunker surrounded green. The green slopes severely from right to left, so the ideal iron shot in, is aiming just right of the pin and landing on the front of the green allowing the slope to feed the ball back to the hole.
#5 "MacArthur" is a 526 yard par 5 dog leg left. Tee shot must avoid the two large bunkers protecting either side of the fairway. accomplish this and you will have your best chance at birdie/eagle up to this point on the course.
#6 "Eisenhower" is a 431 yard par 4 that dog legs right around lake "Tecumseh". Green slopes from back to front and right to left. birdie is a possible score on this green.
#7 "Stilwell" is a 480 yard par 4 sharp dog leg right down to a green protected by water on the right. Aim your tee shot at the small bunker visible from the tee and fade your drive into the fairway and possible down the slope, shortening this hole for your iron shot in. Green has a severe slope in the middle of the green that has to be navigated.
#8 "Clark" is a 179 yard par 3 to an island green. With good wind, club down one and aim just left of the pin to try and catch the back board slope behind the pin, giving you the best chance at birdie.
#9 "Somervell" is a 466 yard par 4 dog leg left and up the hill to finish off the front nine. Four bunkers protect this tight landing tee shot. If safely in the fairway, rip a second shot into the green, aiming just right of the pin and try to catch the back slope to bring the ball back down to the pin.
Eat a hotdog and a drink a beer!
#10 "Spaatz" is a 495 yard par 4 fairly straight hole back down the hill. The tee shot does require a draw to avoid the big bunker to the right of the fairway. Club down for your second shot in, and try to roll your ball down to the hole. Green slopes to the lake.
#11 "Patton" is a 291 yard par 4 straight reachable par 4 to a three tiered green. The trick to this hole is to avoid "George's creek" that wraps around the green and down along the fairway.
#12 "Haislip" is a 231 yard par 3 to a protected green with bunkers in the front and water to the back to catch any shots that go long.
#13 "Ridgway" is a 409 yard par 4 straight par 4 up a slight hill. A creek and trees protect the left side of the fairway where as a large bunker protects the right. Fairway slopes from right to left and gives a narrow landing area for the best view into the green. Another set of tee boxes has been built to give a different look into this fairway, causing you to need to fade the ball in.
#14 "Van Fleet" is a 590 yard par 5 back down the hill to green placed just over "George's creek". A straight tee shot is required here to avoid bunkers to the left and a nature reserve to the right. A 3wd can be used for your second shot over the pin trees if the wind allows, best to stay left. 3rd shot into the green must get back to the green to avoid the severe slope in front of the green that will take your ball back into George's creek.
#15 "Truscott" is a 166 yard par 3 back over "George's creek". This is a sloped green from back to front and requires a tough putt to be made to give up a birdie.
#16 "Hamilton" is a 466 yard par 4 up the hill to a raised green. tee shot must carry the bunker in the middle of the fairway and then split the two bunkers on either side. Hitting the fairway will give you your best chance at reaching this green. The green has a severe slope to it and will be a challenge to par.
#17 "Powell" is a 442 yard par 4 This is the signature hole on the course with its rock wall in front of the green along "George's creek". It takes you back down the hill with a very tight tee shot. Setting you up with a beautiful second shot into the three sectioned green.
#18 "Dunwoody" is a 495 yard par 4 over the lake "Hendrix" and up the hill back to the club house. Green slopes from right to left, so aim your second shot right of the pin allowing you to catch the slope back to the hole.
Hope you enjoy your round and come back again for another!
