I thought I would share my thought process when thinking up a new design from scratch. I believe having a clear vision of your course before you start is so important to the success of it (at least for me). This is quite literally what came to my mind today when planning my next move in the designer:
Mountain Course (Swiss theme, duh) Concept - Try it out, might scrap The Ute Club in favor of this
Entire plot is a mountain
Course goes through and around the mountain but doesn't feel "forced" into it (No upper cliff, flat fairway, bottom cliff BS)
Over 8,000 yards
Par 73
Course starts at the top of the mountain and works its way to the bottom (but make sure to have uphill holes too)
Make a golf cart chairlift type thing around 1st tee and 18th green. (Try to make it so the lift can actually be connected). Maybe even have it go over/in view of a hole or two
See a lot of the course on hole 4 or 5 (Huge grand view). Depending on routing
Try mapping holes first on flat plot, then sculpting general mountain shape (Don't make the total elevation change too crazy. 400-500 feet), followed by individual hole sculpting
Go for one continuous cart path
Very little tree cover. Let the landscape do the talking and open up views. Large rocks (use the GOAT rock), bushes (don't go too crazy), and tall grasses (go crazy, might be too time consuming) for most of the planting. Maybe denser trees at the bottom
Grass landing strip with plane by finishing holes
Rivers/Waterfalls (probably)
Names:
Snake Hill Run
Black Diamond Run (Like this one but should think of something better)
The point is, don't just start making a course in the designer with nothing in mind. Before you even touch the designer, take pictures in your mind of what your course will look like. The theme, surfaces, landscape, planting, overall course feel. Think about the overall concept (mine is a giant mountain that takes up the whole plot with a course that runs from top to bottom). This is what works for me. I'm sure there's guys here that can just start messing around in the designer and build a great course.
