What lengths do other designers like to make for their courses? I really like making courses with wide varieties of hole lengths but have an overall balance and I usually come out around 7,000-7,200 yards.
For hole lengths, I usually think of it like this (for Master clubs and subject to elevation):
Short par 3: under 140 Long par 3: over 190
Short par 4: under 430 Long par 4: over 480
Short par 5: under 550 Long par 5: over 650 (really anything that’s a sure thing 3 shots)
Again these are really subject to elevation

I think it’s better to have variety.
It’s good to have a couple of beastly par 4s, cardwreckers.
It’s also good to have a gimme par 5 (510-540) and a very short par 3 (120-140 yards)
You also need a long par 3 (190+) and a driveable par 4 (300) and a couple of choice short par 4s (360-380)

A wide range of length is key in my opinion it makes a good course more of a challenge and adds more variety with each shot to the green. I have to keep myself in check so that I don't get in the same distance rut.

I've been trying to do some interesting things with short par 4's since they seem to have the widest range of yardages. I love the idea of a drivable par 4. Really feels like THE hero of heroic shots to not only have a monster tee shot but to try to fit it into a small window and roll it up close to the hole. Really blends the power game with the finesse game.
I would also like to see more interesting drive-chip short par 4's in the 350-390 yard range (masters). Don't see a whole lot of those.

In my opinion they can play much harder than medium-long par 3s because the greens are usually smaller/less accepting and the ball is in the air for so long it can be a real adventure with some wind.

I agree with the shorter par 4 holes my first course all my par 4s were 400yds. or more and now I try to put at least 3 par 4s under 390yds, and I should make a par 4 under 350 yds. I don't remember if I have ever had a par 3 that was over 200yds.My last course I have a 127yd. and a 145yd. par 3 hole. One thing I don't have on my last course is a short par 5 that is something I need to do on my next course.
