Fellow course designers:
I am looking at what I might start on after the Rookie event, and I wanted some opinions about the ideas I have been kicking around. The course I was envisioning would:
1. Start from a Lidar plot of land (no course on it) that would look like a promising location for a course. Use that terrain as much as possible with minimal dirt movement.
2. Would have no sand bunkers or water on the course (perhaps the ocean in a background but not in play. All the playing drama would have to be in the form of trees, barrancas (sp), rocks, OB, etc.
3. The last four or five holes on the course would be very high-risk-high-reward holes. Have you ever been 2/3 through a round, not been doing well, and are desperate for eagles or birdies? Of course you have! This would cater to that feeling. There would be safe outlets on those holes though.
Please feel free to offer suggestions about this idea, I welcome them even if you think they are dumb.

I would avoid option #1. LIDAR slows the designer down to a crawl. What you could do is import the lidar data, inspect the plot, and then recreate the terrain yourself reasonably closely on a fresh plot so you can design on it without the designer slowing down.

Also think you might struggle with no bunkers or water - it's really, really difficult. If you haven't, play Ol' Rocky Top a couple of times for ideas.

You know I worried about that problem, but I did not notice that much slowdown when I was doing the Lidar version of Crooked Stick GC. It was about the same delay on my crappy Dell G3 laptop as when I do courses on the PS4. I do worry about using too much plant meter though. For that reason I am going to have to pick a design with not a lot of planting and be selective about it. Thanks for the heads up though.

For that reason I am going to have to pick a design with not a lot of planting and be selective about it. Thanks for the heads up though. There's a way around this; What I do is import the LiDAR without any trees on it, the LiDAR takes up about 1/3 of the object meter if you don't import the existing trees. You can then do this either one of two ways; 1. Go to settings - Terrain - and then slide to the max on trees, grass and plants which will give you loads of objects WITHOUT adding to the meter. Then go to sculpt / landscape and there is an option called "clear generated trees" this gives you a brush to rub out trees you don't want. 2. lay out the entire course and plant the significant trees that you want the golfer to see etc. and then add all the generated trees and get the clear generated trees brush out again, this brush won't remove trees you manually planted so you can be pretty cavalier with it. This is the method I use to ensure I have a full plot of wildlife but don't reach my object limit. I'm actually documenting this on my current RCR WIP: Stoke Park Hope that helps

I have decided to go ahead and try out this idea. It is merely a lark to see if it is doable, so at this point no big deal. I am starting a thread on the Under Construction Forums I will call Topo course WIP, in which I will inundate you all with endless pix of my progress whether you like it or not.

But I'm looking forward to see what you do with it. Watch some playthroughs of Chautauqua for ideas. mattf, ohhey, and reeb all had some good ideas.
