I think it was the biggest issue that detracted from my first course, and starting work on my second it's frustrating me to no end. I'm now trying for a championship highland links feel like this: But I just feel like I can't get the grassy knoll effect right. Not to mention I tried planting just the edges along the full length of only two holes with grass and scrub and it took up nearly 1/3rd of my plant meter. Here are my attempts so far: I personally think it looks ugly, but feel like the course could take criticism for being too empty without something there, and especially going for a championship design. But I like the look a lot better of only using contouring instead of planting, it's a much cleaner and natural feel for me at least. Like this hole, I've tried adding planting but it just seemed to ruin the aesthetic of the landscape: Any thoughts or advice from designers out there? Thank you!

For that yellow look in the distance, you might want to try burying trees just to change the color of the terrain. It'll look good from all the playable areas and you don't have to worry about the game's rendering issues. Even close to the holes you could try the same thing, and then plant half as much grasses on top. Just a thought.

I attempted sinking trees and it just turned the ground an awkward orange color instead of brown like the planted grass. I could be doing it wrong since I haven't seen it done, is there an instructional video or an example out there of how this works?

Some themes it works better on than others. Yes there's a video somewhere, i just don't know where. I'll see if I can find examples later.

Planting trees in the Boreal theme will give the ground that “patchy” rugged, bare land look that Reeb achieved with his Icelandic course.

Yes, Boreal theme is great for that. However it's not necessarily so good for pot bunkers, where the bunker lip color doesn't really work so well. It could work fine with these bunkers, though.
Btw it looks quite good for a second course! Are you spam planting or multiplanting? If you're spam planting you might just have to make it a little bit less dense, and if you're multiplanting it might be time to get used to spam planting things. The planting visuals you're achieving so far are excellent, so if the meter issues are multiplant-related you're headed in a very good direction overall.
You can also fool around with different textures, and also see what some of them look like with the brushed in heavy rough texture vs. the base one. You're going for a more rugged, natural look which usually means more base texture, although I have found that sometimes you can get a lighter look with brushed-in heavy rough. That was the case on Black Rock, although I'm pretty sure it was specific to the heavy rough texture I chose.

I would recommend having a play round St Cyrus, which nailed the look you’re going for. You’re right on the grass and it will kill you if it’s all multiplanted (it’s quite small as well so it won’t even show up) - make it larger then spam plant and make sure you break it up with some of the bushes sunken down.
But yeah, play St Cyrus - it’s a class track as well!

I love the look of your course as it is. Looks are secondary to how it plays IMO. Your bunkering is excellent.
