I'd like to introduce my submission for the Rookie Design Contest, "Shadow Kept". After months of hard work I've finally come to a place where I need to publish this before I lose all sanity. Shadow Kept is as secluded and wondrous as the name would imply. Laid out over 7,256 yards from the black tees, Shadow Kept is a private course located in the Lee Creek river valley in interior British Columbia. This is a fall setting course being played in the most of a late October afternoon. Mixed with risk reward choices and river-lined fairways Shadow Kept will provide a challenge and countless memories for any level of golfer. photos.app.goo.gl/YTv7S5Y9UBnkkcs17

This is the second course from the rookie design contest but so far I have been impressed with the quality and it’s great for the tours to see newer designers coming through. I throughly enjoyed my round here despite having very high winds, but also, this is a good sign when despite the wind, a course plays well. There were a couple of holes I was not a fan off, hole 10, I thought it was to easy to roll of the fairway into the water, good course management of course takes away the risk of this but I thought the fairway was over punishing. Hole 12 was the other hole, it did not affect me as I had a tail wind, but a strong headwind would mean a forced layup, nothing wrong in that itself but the fairway looked a bit small if this were to happen. This is based on what I saw, not what I played so I could be wrong. Anyway, overall a very solid course that was a lot of fun to play. My favorite hole, 18 I think, loved the view from the tee and the clubhouse made for a great background. Good luck in the competition and I look forward to seeing what you bring to us in the future.

Overall, a pretty solid course! 17 was my favorite hole from a design perspective, and 18 is a very difficult finisher. Contouring and bunkers were used well and a few unique hole ideas.
Some critiques from only playing a couple rounds on it: - It seemed that the planting in some spots was a little excessive, and there were a couple holes where it even blocked some sight lines for the hole. (4 tee shot I think?) It sometimes came across as just messy, unkempt, and distracting, even when used where there wasn't much space between the rough and the trees. Took your eyes away from the shape of the hole to a bunch of random scrub and bushes. Might have benefited from the "less is more" approach a little.
- There were several greens and green complexes that just felt flat, or break was very omni-directional. Made it very easy for long putts and approaches, especially on the front 9.
- I couldn't quite understand the design decisions going on with hole #12. I had an 8 mph headwind and was forced to lay up to the narrow fairway short. I managed to hit the fairway, and was then greeted with a wall of trees 100% blocking me out from the green. Ended up having to hit a 55 yd pitch for my second shot to the next fairway before having a long 3rd into the green. Was very frustrating.
- Noticed that many green fringes seemed rather wide. Probably a small nitpick and very subjective, but it crossed my mind more than once where I thought "hmm, this fringe is pretty big."
I think it was a very good effort, I would expect you to do well in the contest!

Well done on the course Dan, lots of excellent craggy sculpting. Not every hole was to my taste but I’d tee up again for another round in the future. Well done on the publish and good luck in the contest

Thanks for the review and the playthrough. Glad you had a good time playing. For hole 12 my intention was to create a hole that would be different every time you'd play it and was hoping it would be one of the trickier holes!

Got a round in on your course Dan, overall a pretty decent publish for your first. Had some definitely unique fairway configurations that prompted some thought rather than just gripping and ripping.
I agree with some of the others with regards to some of the planting and general sculpting. Fairway to green transitions could use a little TLC.
Congrats on the publish and good luck in the competition!

Just played Shadow Kept, and Dan based on the judging criteria you certainly should advance through the first cut, what with the emphasis on execution. The fit and finish on the course is immaculate! The lighting and mist is just right, and the planting is well thought out. It played well for me as well. Some things that may catch the judges attention though are the fairway to green transitions - a number of them are too sharp (I have been gigged on that before), and the lack of a reachable par 4 from the tips; I don't think 17 is reachable. I do not think this a major concern though.
Congratulations on a beautiful course and good luck.

Good work on making the first cut. It's good to see the judges giving some love to the fantasy courses. I thought a lot of the hole designs were super creative and memorable and you weren't afraid to try some outside the box ideas. Most importantly this course is fun to play. With all the feedback and tips from the judges I'm interested to see what you come up with next. Are you working on any new projects?
