This week on the web we are at Oregon Trail Golf Club by sharky21 . Danny, a well known history buff wanted to pay tribute to one those eras of American history, where the spirit of endurance, determination, a sense of adventure and bravery in the face of never ending danger brings the true American spirit to the fore. Yes, this weeks course is a tribute to Oregon Trail, the video game.
First introduced to classrooms in 1971, the game rose in popularity in the mid eighties and more schools introduced computers to the classroom. Children from all over were excited to hear that their boring, mundane school day was been brightened up with the chance to play a computer game only to be traumatized for life as they discovered that computer games do not always play fair, that not everything goes their way, that they are not as good as they thought they would be, that the people doing better than them have to be cheating, yes, Oregon Trail players were the forerunners of you, the modern computer game player.
I wanted to make this tribute as realistic as possible to the original game. Unfortunately the admin of tgctours quickly put a stop to that. My plan to put something in the drinking water to give you all dysentery was rejected, I was not even allowed to give you a mild case of diarrhea. I was going to hire cc am players( cc am players are very poor, public transport to the golf course poor, sharing golf clubs poor and have been known to resort to begging for golf ball money) to be bandits, hiding in the trees, ready to jump out and rob you of your coin but again the fun police put a stop to it. It was a no lose situation, you guys got to Oregon Trail experience and cc am guys got to buy food. Also do you know how hard it is to buy 200 venomous snakes let alone return them, so sadly you won’t be getting snakebit. In fact I have to make sure there are no deaths at all, so unlike the original game where nearly everyone dies.
This left me with a major dilemma, how to get the true spirit of the game into this weeks event. How to make survival a key aspect of the week, how to make trauma, fear and frustration a part of the experience. I was not allowed to give you fatal diseases, have you murdered, attacked by wild animals, all that was left really was the weather, of course, a 💡went on over my head, the weather, I can change the weather. Good look everyone this week, your going to need it to survive the Oregon Trail.
