This would be a fun challenge. It would be extra challenging/fun if you started with a sloping plot or had to incorporate some macro feature into the design. My next course will be restricting the plot size as much as possible. I want to see if I can route 18 holes on a less than 1000 x 800 yard rectangular plot.

A long while ago I messed with this idea and went even further, if I remember right the plot was at 650 x 650 yards for a full length par of at least 70 course. It’s a fun albeit not too realistic exercise in routing holes.

Design a hole with 4 separate greens for each pin position, each in a different style. I did a lot of wacky creative green shapes in my latest course and I think it turned out pretty well

I've just started a course that will have no fairways wider than 30 yards and no greens bigger than the grid provided. In other words, no more Mr. Nice Guy with this course.

I did a lot of wacky creative green shapes in my latest course and I think it turned out pretty well I've done that with two pins on two greens - the 15th at Angus Bay International which is inspired by the 7th at Prestatyn. The hole is perfectly playable but you can only set one waypoint, meaning the flyover will only go to one green.

I find regular golf course ideas tough. It's easier for me to come up with weird ideas. Having designed maybe 8 or so courses, I'm still a beginner at it, but I enjoying creating my own courses and playing them
"House to House" - you get to play from my house to my sisters house. I tried to be as accurate as I could given the items we can use. It is a 2 hole course both par 7s. Sometimes you have to bounce your shots off items to get a better position. It was made as a joke to see if my dad could recognize where we were playing.
"The Kracken" this is a 9 arm octopus. An island clubhouse with alternating in and out holes to make the "arms"
"Aces win a Car (x9)" 9 par 3s with a car to win on every hole.
"All star Skills Challenge" a 9 hole course with holes made to test a particular skill. Drive accuracy, Long iron par 3, short iron par 3, blind greens, holes that force long putts. Etc.
"Mill Run Executive" regular and tour version. I tried to recreate the uxbridge ON course that I played a lot in my teens. It was $10 a round. 18 hole executive course. Then I also created a tour version where I altered bunkers added a pond, jazzed it up for a "tournament" and crammed it full of people.
"Template Island" I googled template golf holes to find older erase history, and tried to make a course of all template style holes. Road hole, island green, redan, biazzaritz (sp?),volcano green, etc.
"Four Green Farm" what if a farm built 4 big greens. One in each corner of its property, and had 18 holes going between them? There are shared fairways that you play from both directions, greens built on the side of hills with flat areas for pins, but slightly miss and the ball could roll 40 yards away and give tough up hill chip situations. Lots of fun trying not to get frustrated. I think people will hate this one. Lol.
These may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I find them fun. I have others where I've tried to create regular courses, they are ok, and I've learned a lot and have favourite parts of them. But I have more fun designing off of stupid ideas.

Some of the quirkier ones: - encourage (do not force) players to hit a 6I or shorter off the tee on a par 4 hole - build at least one hole where using an adjacent fairway is the best way to play the hole. - build a par 4 that is longer than a par 5 on the same course. - build a par 3 that is longer than a par 4 on the same course. - add a hazard other than a bunker within a fairway. My The Swiss Wall has a par 4 that is the longest hole on the course and there are four par 5s.

Some real cool ideas. I’m on design #2 and #3. End up just staring and scrolling sometimes. I’m trying to be creative but want good challenging holes without copycatting other designers. Not sure if it’s been done or is relatable but a contest where you have a completely auto gen course and you go to work. Anything goes but you cannot edit any green, fairway or tee box. But you can sculpt them and no other limits. Got the idea from an auto gen course I have that I use to practice sculpting techniques I am still learning. And what all those brushes do.
