Thank you for this thread. I honestly had no idea what I was going to do after my contest course was published. Now I’ve sketched out a rough concept and ideas are flowing. Very excited again when I was feeling down about ideas.

Course with as few green complexes as possible. Criss cross holes allowed...life safety not an issue.

I have already done a few things of what people have said. I've designed fictional courses set in real locations (Clayton Wood, Swiss Wall), I've set a course in my local location (Clayton Wood), I've put a par 4 on The Swiss Wall that is longer than all four of the par 5s and I've designed fictional holes that are inspired by real life ones (8 holes at Angus Bay International and the whole course at Northwood).
My biggest problem isn't having ideas for holes. My biggest problem is getting the scuplting right for these holes, though I am improving.

Design an 18 hoke course in 2 hours. Yes you can make a decent course, just use auto gen greens or give yourself an extra 30 minutes for the greens. And try to avoid planting until you know everything else is done.

Design an 18 hoke course in 2 hours. Yes you can make a decent course, just use auto gen greens or give yourself an extra 30 minutes for the greens. And try to avoid planting until you know everything else is done. Honestly, no, you can’t. 24 hours would be a push for even the very best designers. Having done a bit of a "course in 24 hours" challenge, I'd agree with Ben. That means an hour to route and do the bare bones plot, an hour per hole, and then 3 hours to polish everything up and plant it. Got through maybe 7 or 8 holes, and several of them are woefully unfinished, so any leftover time would just be getting the course in basic, playable shape, with zero window dressing. And I'd consider myself one of the quickest designers out there. 2 hours isn't remotely enough time to make anything worth playing.

Well I have a lot of improving to do at the designer... Good news! You are in the right place and we have all been there / still are . As someone who is a newer designer and was really recently exactly where you are, here are a few tips (slightly off-topic, but I am sure that nobody will mind) 1) Never autogen anything apart from trees (and even then only for background filler, get rid of all the autogen trees in playable areas). Golden rule: autogen = godawful. 2) Watch all of these. Then watch them again whilst designing. www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLMfOamKMuHDtDwDy5DUSwgog7Kvqhoeq83) Hop on Twitch, subscribe to the following (in no particular order): VctryLnSprts, Crazycanuck1985, mattf27tgc, Reebdoogtgc. There are others, but that'd be the best bunch to get you started. Watch anything when they are designing, pop in comments and just ask questions about what they are doing. With Reebdoog's, he has some tutorial stuff, but at the moment, it's great to watch him play through other people's designs and give feedback, which gives an insight into what is good/less good and how to accomplish that. Also, these are really good for the more intermediate level tips: www.youtube.com/channel/UCdKgngepOsfZ3hZFlO_Xybw4) When you do get designing, play around with the tools, don't be afraid to experiment and publish a 3 hole beta to get feedback from other designers. Don't try for all 18 as you'll get better once you've had the feedback. The quicker you get that, the better. Honestly, it's a steep learning curve, but if you're willing to invest some time to learn from the more experienced guys, you'll get way better, very quickly. Enjoy the ride!

Without planting, 2 hours is about how long it takes me to design a par 5. By the time I get all the bad edges out of my fairway, it's dinner time.

My next course will be restricting the plot size as much as possible. I want to see if I can route 18 holes on a less than 1000 x 800 yard rectangular plot.

Alright I’ve got one now. Try designing a course based on a name of something, like.a song. For example, the course Old Town Road would be in an old town with a lot of road holes.

Or better yet, a course based on an album. Each hole representing a song. I’ve always drawn comparisons to albums and golf courses in that they are both structured to provide a linear succession of experiences that relate to the whole. Alright I’ve got one now.
