Once or twice a year on the web, I like to encourage creativity to allow a designer to push the boundaries of the perceived image of a golf course and to show people that a golf course can be different yet playable. So I thought to myself, who will I get to design such a course. One of the first names that came to mind was joegolferg ,well that was a mistake, as soon as the word fantasy was out of my mouth, I got a 45 minute lecture on how course design was a specific skill, combining the beauty of Mother Nature with precise geometric mathematics to create a work of art. After I finally got of the phone, I thought of pablo , then I remembered that Pablo’s idea of a fantasy course was ultra wide fairways with flat greens. No, I need someone new, someone that has not been scared by comments on courses across the various tours here on the forums, someone with hope and enthusiasm, I needed a virgin.
Of course by virgin, I mean someone that never had their course on tour before. The I remembered cephyn . I have watched Kevin stream his designing. He was creative, he followed his own rules. He was innocent, he was pure, he was perfect, or so I thought. I called Kevin and told him, I wanted fantasy, hardcore fantasy. He was thrilled, he always wanted to share his work with the community, that he knew there was more like him out there. I’m telling you now, Kevin is one sick puppy. I can not share with you what Kevin produced because this is a family website but why every living creature, both male and female had four breasts, I’ll never understand stand, and that sketch of a unicorn with two centaurs, well I’ll never be able to watch My Little Pony again.
I got back on to Kevin and said it while I appreciated his efforts, it was a fantasy golf course that I was looking for. He replied, that that made more sense and got to work on Roadrunner Mesa. A beautiful countryside golf course until it was destroyed and left barren in the epic struggle between roadrunner and coyote. None the less, a course whose stunning views of a barren landscape brings a beauty of its own. A challenging course were shot planning is vital, where having the correct angle into the green can be the difference between birdie and bogey. A unique challenge that I know will not be for everyone, it’s not a course for the purists but a course that shows what creativity can do, that’s shows a course can be different but immensely playable and I hope everyone can appreciate the work done this week to bring us something unlike anything we have played on the web before. Have fun, good luck, and bonus points for anyone that hits the arch.
