I’m having difficulties getting empty space to look good and I’m tempted to just fill it all in with dense trees.
I used dense trees on my first course and that worked fine because it was a mountainous alpine type course in the Swiss theme. This one I’m using the Rustic theme and having trouble getting empty space to look good.
I would like to avoid going with dense trees again but the scenery is just looking a little unrealistic right now.
Any thoughts?

Is the empty space you are discussing inside the plot, or outside the area containing the course? If it is outside, can you erect hills/mountains to block out the view? If it is inside the boundaries of play, what I did on Pauper's Island was use large waste (sand) areas and lakes/bays to fill in the empty space. Because that course was a basically flat Tropical theme plot it worked well, but might not in Rustic, especially if it is hilly.

As the above poster said, hills and mountains can be good ways to close off the view. You could also build a town or neighborhoods in the background if that fits the theme better. Or it being rustic, maybe some farmland? I would also suggest trying to find pictures of courses that are similar to what you're trying to make, and see if you can find anything interesting in the background of those that you could pull off. Maybe some kind of building, bridge, observatory, tower, rock formation, or something like that poking through the trees.

Worth looking at a lot of courses by csugolfer60 including what he’s doing with Old Gohbar Farms and Susquehannock. Particularly the way he uses cart path and sculpting to frame the out of hole areas

Empty space is a tough nut to crack. Links-style courses (and other tree-less courses) are very tough to pull off because it's so difficult to get the planting right. Too much grass/gorse and you get lag. Too little and it looks bad. Plus, the game only renders grass when you're right in it so you can't see it at all at a distance. Certain themes give you an opportunity to bury trees for patches of brown (Boreal, Delta, Tropical, and Countryside are best). This can help but without at least a little planting, it still looks weird.
Using elevation to hide bare areas is a good idea. Some designers put residences/city. Some use forest. The best use strategically placed plantings that make a course look right, but still accentuate the overall bare look. When I'm designing, I tinker until I think it looks right. This could take 15 minutes or 3 days per hole. I've gone back and completely wiped out days worth of work to start over just because of the planting. The worst part is, what I think looks great doesn't necessarily look great to players/judges/other designers. You will need to stick to what you think is best or else you'll wind up with a course designed for someone else.
And, at the end of the day, what matters most are tees, fairways, greens, and bunkers. If the course plays great, few will complain about the other stuff.

Thanks for the replys guys. I am referring to empty space within the plot. Plot border has been taken care of. Great suggestions. I’ll see what I can do. Probably just a case where I need to spend not time on it

This was something csugolfer60 pointed me towards a while back. Although it is not directly talking about golf courses at all, the theory and ideas are still relevant for TGC course design. There are other videos by the same people based on similar subject matter, just follow to their channel from this vid if interested.
