Hello,
*Disclaimer* - This does not pertain to anything TGC Tour events and such. I ask this to gain clarity only.
Are the “default” speed (FW, Green) and firmness settings considered the most optimal, conducive settings in terms of how a course is designed?
This information will be crucial if I decide to take on a project I’m considering.
Thanks in advance!

Are the “default” speed (FW, Green) and firmness settings considered the most optimal, conducive settings in terms of how a course is designed? This information will be crucial if I decide to take on a project I’m considering. Thanks in advance! Generally speaking the designers set their default green speeds where they feel the course plays best. That said. There are a lot of designers who design with the green speeds maxed out so they can see red/yellow lines and avoid them near the pin locations and then back it down to a setting somewhere between the normal settings i.e. 172 or 155 or something. Very Fast = 187 Fast = 163 Moderate = 144 Slow = 119 Very Slow = 101 Those are the speeds you get if you select those values in the course settings menu when you start a round so most designers who've been around a minute will put their default speed somewhere between those gaps to give another option for green speed. Some designers will also specify if their greens will not tolerate certain settings. I know of a few courses where the designer has stated "don't play on very fast" because at 187 green speed there are red lines and yellow lines everywhere. Hope that answers your question.

Thanks for response!
Good information, the premise of my inquiry is to find out if there is some sort of “constant” from course to course. So for example if I play <insert course> without any deviation from the aforementioned default settings, am I getting the most optimal experience based on those settings?
Hope that makes sense.

Yes in most cases I believe this is correct. In general when I am playing a new course I leave everything on Default so I can play the course and the designer intended.

I think the one caveat here is that - the designer cannot set wind direction or speed, and "Default" wind is essentially random/variable. So it really depends on what you mean by "Optimal".
I definitely have courses where certain wind speeds/directions are NOT optimal, but I can't do anything about that.

I definitely have courses where certain wind speeds/directions are NOT optimal, but I can't do anything about that. This is a great point. Just to add, I was kind of surprised when I started designing that wind speed/direction was the one condition the designer couldn’t control as I think it has the greatest effect on how a course plays. Greens definitely have an effect and if you want the most optimal experience as far as putting is concerned, leave them on default as the designer intended.

Only referring to Green and FW speed and firmness. 😉 I feel wind speed and direction can alter the way a course plays as well.

Sure, but they're not wholly independent for "optimal" play on the course. I know one of my courses is nearly unplayable with fast/firm greens if there are high winds, for instance.

Understood. Can I ask if fast/firm for that particular course is default?

Understood. Can I ask if fast/firm for that particular course is default? Yes, as that's the way I wanted it to play in low-medium winds. High winds gets really dicey and Very High is unplayable - the greens won't hold any shots.
