If you have played any of my courses, you might have noticed I like an elevated green or two in my designs (or 10 or 11...). Most of that comes from the local courses I play here in New England. Last weekend I hit a local fave, South Shore Country Club in Hingham. The course was built in 1922 by Wayne Stiles and is definitely a classic example of the period. (I used to think it was a Donald Ross before I knew much about these things) I had a chance to snap a couple of pictures before my meltdown on the second nine… 1. The 403yd par 4 5th, tight tee shot to elevated green…of which you have little chance of hitting if not on the fairway. 2. The 384yd par 4 7th tee shot is over a marsh to a very soft fairway, and then…up…the…hill… Can you feel the legs burnin’ pushin’ the cart up this doozy? You can see the flag just barely at the top. 3. This is the view from behind the par 3 8th (188yds)…the tee shot goes back dooown said hill and is located on top of the hill with the rocks. This course has been in great condition in recent years, especially mid summer. Not bad last week, rounding into shape nicely.

I really love a climb finish to my rounds. My legs don’t but I feel it is quite apt to have one last mountain to climb to finish off. My local course is a fairly short hole but a steep uphill approach shot to finish. Love the hole.
