Finally able to start knocking this one out. For those unfamiliar with this Northern Michigan course, it's a collaboration between Alister MacKenize and Perry Maxwell, two giants of the game. I don't follow the rankings closely enough to be precise, but I think the course regularly sits in the top 20 or 30 of the world Top 100 rankings. It's a short course at only 6500 yards from the back, but the greens are small and NASTY! I have them at 156ft right now, and don't think I could go any higher. Don't pay too much attention to the planting at the moment, just finishing up with the first hole.

2nd Tee Severe back to front tilt. Not a lot of pin-able locations here. 3rd Hole, a little bit of a Redan-like par 3. Common theme: Not many pins available

Played the first 5 holes in wind today. This little course is taking me to school!
In order to putt well on these greens, you have to absolutely be in the right spots. In order to be in the right spots you have to control your distance, which means you have to be in the fairway. Each fairway seems to be angled and canted just enough that the more you try to chew off on the drive, the harder it is to stay on the fairway.
Looking forward to see what others think, maybe my game just stinks, but I think it's more likely that this is a top-rated course for a reason.

I’ve heard this is Tom Doak’s favorite course; from your descriptions that makes total sense from what I’ve read of his thoughts on the course. Excited is an understatement... to get to play these courses that I most likely will never play in real life is quite the treat.

4th tee Cant of the fairway works against the dogleg, tricky to nail the right line and distance Tee shot at the 5th, one of the stranger par 4's in North America The slope of the fairway works completely against the drive. Club selection can be odd here. If the fairway didn't cause enough problems, the green slopes severely away as well. 6th tee. Go short and left, bend it right around the tree, or go directly over. The finger of rough is perfectly placed. Another surprisingly difficult fairway to hit. The 6th green has bowls on bowls on bowls.

cannot wait to see the boomerang green I've played MacKenzie's boomerang at the U of Michigan course, and it's nothing like the Crystal Downs one. The whole left side/outer edge of the boomerang is a big bank to sling the ball around. Should be fun. Another fun one will be the 11th green, but I'll have a whole post on that one when I get to it.
