For those who do not know him Braid was born in 1870 in Scotland and passed in 1950. Part of the Great triumvirate along with Harry Vardon and JH Taylor he won 5 Open Championships between 1901 and 1910. Latterly became the club professional at Walton Heath. He designed many a great course across the British isles and I hope I can show some of his work to a wider audience.
To begin here are some pictures of his work at Gleneagles with the Kings and Queens courses. The Kings was the championship at Gleneagles until the Nicklaus course was built (the one the Ryder cup was held on) and has hosted Scottish Opens in the past.
edit: corrected a mistake
5th Kings
13th Kings
9th Kings
Queens 4th and 13th &14th
Queens 17th
Queens 10th

I'm a member at one of his courses (Haydock Park) and I'm going playing his Swinton Park on Friday. The club owner has decided to sell out and build a housing estate over the top of it! Wanker.

Feels like that should be blocked although I doubt it will. It will be a great loss if it does get built over.

Part of the Great triumvirate along with Harry Vardon and JH Taylor he won 5 Open Championships between 1901 and 1910 in his career and was the last golfer to retain the title of champion golfer of the year until Padraig Harrington in 2008. Latterly became the club professional at Walton Heath. He designed many a great course across the British isles and I hope I can show some of his work to a wider audience. Great player, great designer. I don't want to rain on your parade, but Padraig Harrington was not the next player to retain The Open Championship after James Braid... 2005 & 2006 Tiger Woods 1982 & 1983 Tom Watson 1971 & 1972 Lee Trevino 1961 & 1962 Arnold Palmer 1954, 1955 & 1956 Peter Thomson 1949 & 1950 Bobby Locke 1928 & 1929 Walter Hagen 1926 & 1927 Bobby Jones You missed out some great champions!

Last UK golfer to retain maybe? Yes that was it. Last golfer from the British Isles to retain the title.

Boat of Garten Golf Club is set in the Cairngorms National park and is amazingly testing short course redesigned to 18 holes by Braid in 1930. It also holds a special place to me as it was where I made my first ever birdie. It is a very tight course with many undulations and is one of Braid's most beautiful with the Cairngorm mountains setting as a backdrop, and the whistle of the steam train as it passes the course on the heritage railway providing distractions other than the golf.
