Welcome to Tantallon Castle, my first course. This highlands course has taken me some time as I have learned my way through the designer thanks to this community. I really can't thank you guys enough for all the help, without it the game can feel very intimidating. But because of people playing through my betas and giving constant feedback, and the countless twitch and youtube streams I have watched, I was able to put this together. There are 3 tees, Blue (Master/Pro Clubs), White (Pro), Red (Beginner); And 4 pins, with 1 being the easiest and 4 being the most challenging round. Also, I got hit by the HB Highlands issue of "Soft" fairway conditions. It was designed to be played with firm fairways, firm greens, and medium fast greens. Wind can be default (it tends to be around 6-11 mph apparently) and I don't have a preferred or prevailing direction chosen just yet, but that could change. All other details are preferred on default to get the proper lighting and weather. The course is routed along my interpretation of real Scottish coastline (Xbox1 player here, no LIDAR fun for me). Tantallon Castle was built in 1350 and was used for 300 years as a Scottish stronghold. When I visited Scotland I was able to take a tour of the Castle while playing other golf courses along the "Golf Coast" of East Lothian. Before I even knew this game existed I wished there was a golf course running alongside the ruins to match the beautiful neighboring courses of Glen Golf Club, North Berwick, Muirfield, Gullane. So, when I bought this game, I decided to make it my first course, and it borrows from its neighbors; from the challenge of Muirfield, to the walls that are in play at North Berwick and the views of Bass Rock from Glen. I have a few screenshots, but I am going to beg karma4u to help an amateur out beyond this one pic. I hope you enjoy your round! -JW

Played the beta yesterday with VctryLnSprts PithyDoctorG & cephyn and thought it was very well done. Ingenious the way he recreated the castle ruins & rock island, and then routed the course to show off those features throughout the round. Course also makes you think about club selection and angles off the tee, which I thoroughly enjoy. Noted on stream a couple of areas where I thought JW could improve on his next design but, first design or not, this was a very fun, well put-together course. Give it a play, fellas!

Highly recommend this one! I enjoyed seeing this course develop, and I’m really excited about the fact that jwtexan is this good on a first publish. I would not be surprised to see this looked at for a CC tour stop.

Thanks everyone! And thanks to gdog for streaming the course today during your day stream. It was fun to see you go over, around and sometimes through the trouble. He managed the trifecta of hitting the ramparts of the outter wall on 12, the ruins in front of 14 and the Biarritz of 16. Trouble lurks on the back 9. I submitted for TGCT approval today, didn’t realize that was a separate thing that should be done right away, so sorry for the reviewers on the slight delay.

Geek out moment: I said in my WIP thread for Tantallon that I had been obsessing over this game for months before I ever bought it, thanks in part to a series of YouTube videos from jimgem and Crazycanuck1985 . Well today I wake up, and JimGem has made a video streaming Tantallon. This is going to sound really dorky, but, one of my goals for this first course was to make that happen, so this felt pretty cool to watch. Great drive on 3, haven’t seen anyone that close yet. It’s a tough club selection off the tee for a par 4. Awesome eagle. Also, he finished with a -13, 59, and I think that is the club record so far.

Decided to move this post down and add the image above with the name of the holes, because, really, come on people, we all just want to see photos at the top of posts, not long course descriptions. But, if you made it this far, maybe you are actually interested in a little more info on each hole. The course description that is handed out with each yardage book: 1. Open – The opening hole introduces you to the landscape as the approach shot has a tourist view of Bass Rock and Tantallon Castle. 2. Left - The first par 5 of the course is a dog leg left that gives you the feeling of the remaining routing, as 13th fairway is to the right and 8th is to the far left. 3. Selection - Driveable, downhill par 4 that shares a green with the par 3, 7th. Choose your club wisely off the tee. 4. Coast - Your first hole along the coast. Accuracy is key, as this small green has bite. 5. Rock - A beautiful downhill par 3 along the coast looking out at Bass Rock and the Firth of Forth. 6. Split - A par 5 with a choice off the tee. If the tide is low, and the wind is at your back, the lower fairway is open as an option as a way to bomb the ball down the hill getting closer to the green, but players may prefer the upper fairway for the approach. 7. Postal - A par 3 that is a tribute to one of the best par 3's in the world, the postage stamp at Royal Troon. It shares the green with the 3rd hole. 8. Short - Another short par 4, but placement along the fairway is again key as this green is brutal. 9. Long - A long par 4 finishing the opening loop, with a view of the clubhouse that members decided to give 3 towers just like the original Tantallon Castle. 10. View - The tee shot gives you a view of 6 holes on the back 9 at once. Green is shared with 16 and features a Biarritz gap that splits the two pins. 11. Choice - Par 4 with danger off the tee and a tough approach. A challenging hole, where one day’s wind could lead to driver and another forces a 5 iron. 12. Rampart - After staring at the castle for hours around the course, you finally will play a hole towards it, as the 12th green is behind the original, smaller, outer wall and tower. There is a pot bunker splitting the 12th and 14th greens. 13. Triplets - Be as brave as you wish with the tee shot, but beware of the triplet bunkers in the fairway that are awaiting your arrival and dunes to the right. 14. Ruins - A beautiful par 5 that ends next to Tantallon Castle. Your drive is over water and your second shot, like the 12th, must clear the outer wall of the former stronghold. For your third, avoid a ruined building that still stands that was once the castle’s pigeon house. 15. Blind - After walking through the castle gate tunnel you see Bass Rock in the distance, look to the right and you will see the green, then walk 30 yards left to the tee. Your shot is among the castle ruins and is blind to the green for this par 3 over water. 16. Gap - A par 4 with plenty of options off the tee, including going for the green if the wind is friendly. Although you can’t see the green, locals know to “follow the brown bushes” off the tee to get the line. The green is shared with 10 and features a Biarritz gap in the middle between the two holes and provides a challenging obstacle for those brave enough to try and drive this green. 17. Dune - A long par 3 off the last dune before the water, lending itself to a Redan style green. Careful of your club selection and check the wind as you enjoy your final view of Bass Rock. 18. Close - A challenging par 4 to finish your day with a lot of trouble in the fairway and a green surrounded by bunkers on all sides. Enjoy!

That's a great first course you've got there, a good links course with choices to be made off the tee.
