This is something I have had an idea about for a while but have only got around to actually testing it on an test plot in the last couple of days.
I have used the countryside theme quite a lot whilst building courses and I have always had a nemesis in that theme which is a piece of grass that shows up everywhere when you have the autogen grass turned up.
That nemesis is this piece of grass !
Comparison to all the other grasses in the Countryside theme (apart from the red and blue flowers)
The reason this grass has been my nemesis for so long is simply it's draw distance, or well technically it's draw draw distance in comparison to all the other grasses.
25 Yards
50 Yards
100 Yards
150 Yards
200 Yards
250Yards
As you can see its draw distance compared to the other grasses is massively different. I only took these comparison pics up to 250 yards but you can see from the actual built hole ones that the other grass does remain visible far beyond that (if you have a decent even machine), whereas all the other grasses have started to disappear from view at 100 yards distance.
That is why I haven't liked this issue in the past, because when playing on a course with this grass planted you will find that you see all these odd little light bits showing up in the distance that just look silly until all the other grass pops up once you get into their draw distance range. Because of this I have spent countless hours manually going around my courses deleting these "rogue" grasses individually one by one.
It was while doing this very boring and tedious task that I had my idea...….."what would they look like mass planted as fescue ?"
Well here are the results :
This is just a very very basic test hole idea with the grasses laid just using multiplant for speed and to test them all at that same size.
The hole is just over 400yds to the green (which is what you can just see at the bottom of the hole)
Both sides of the hole are fully planted to the same density all the way down to (and around) the green site
The left side of the hole is using the grass I am referring to mixed in with a bit of standard light grass.
The right side of the hole is just using normal grasses set at the same size as the left.
The only difference with the pics is I have changed the texture colours for testing purposes.
These pics were taken on PC with all the in game advanced graphics settings maxed out (apart from render scale which is set at 100%). which I know everyone won't be able to play at, however you can clearly see that the grasses on the left are still visible all the way down the hole to the green which as I said is approx. 400yds away.
Again this was done very quickly using multiplant only for testing so done properly with varying sizing etc on an actual course it could look awesome I think. The only drawback potentially is that this particular piece of grass is only available in the Countryside and Boreal themes.
I hope people find this useful and I am interested to hear what anyone thinks.
Cheers
