Just wondering if most designers mess with the rough and heavy rough roll and firmness characteristics to get a more realistic effect? Not saying it's not realistic by default, but wondering if people familiar with the game have found better settings. And if so, what numbers do you use? I guess the same question goes for the fairway and green surfaces if you'd like to post your custom settings for those as well.

The sculpting of the areas surrounding the fairway will of course have greater effect, but slowing the roll and reducing the firmness of rough can reduce the likelihood of kicking back out of the rough. I have not messed with it enough to know how it impacts the lie % but with bunkers it will make balls more likely to plug so generally a worse lie.

I have but I’m not sure how effective it is. I figured it couldn’t hurt.

Thanks guys for the feedback. I guess for now I will just leave them at their defaults until I get a chance to test it out myself.

I've messed with them a little. When I want a dried out course, I'll pump up the bounce and roll in the rough. Does this matter in game? I doubt it.

This was one of the things I spent time messing about on Sapphire Valley (Tour). With several playtests on different settings, I can comfortably say that it does indeed effect how it plays.
From the softest setting to the firmest, there is about 10 yards difference in roll out for a driver on master clubs and the % lie is pretty much about 8-9% lower.
Hope this helps.

I ramped the heavy rough right down for Northwood Golf Club and noticed there was less bounce and roll. I never worked out the maths though.

I am new to TGC2019 design, but looking at the rough, heavy rough, and bunker firmness and roll I felt that irl golf, heavy rough especially has much less roll/bounce than fairway, so I lowered those numbers considerably. Bunkers are more about just what you want for a course - hard fine sand bunkers with more bounce/roll or fluffy bunkers with less. I have never actually tested how much the changes made, but it might be interesting.
