Pebble Beach - the "Okay-ist" course in America. That's exactly how I feel about PB...and Sawgrass....and Harbour Town. But don't get me wrong, I LOVE the The Players' ; and Sawgrass works as host, but I was not impressed when I played there and don't have any desire to play it again. Same with HT. And if PB hosts the US Open, send the AT&T somewhere else that year. Better yet, don't play the USO there, let's get another course in the rotation. And don't get me started on Torrey Pines in 2021, what a joke.

Sometimes if I wonder about the "Pebble is overrated" talk being so pervasive that maybe it's become underrated (and perhaps holes 6-10 are taken for granted given how familiar they are?).
I will concede that, in a number of ways, the course has aged pretty badly compared to many of its Golden Age brethren, mainly due to all the rounds played on it and significant green shrinkage. It also doesn't help that the weather is bad and the greens are like silly putty when it's on TV every year. However, I think it's an oversimplification to dismiss holes 1-3 and 11-16 as forgettable golf holes (though that may be true as they're currently presented). For example, on hole 3 one can gain a better angle into the green by flirting with the barranca on the left (unfortunately the overgrown nature of the barranca and the pointless added right side fairway bunkers detract from the hole), and also look at the old pictures of 13--playing closer to the sandy waste on the left clearly grants a better angle for the 2nd shot. Not saying none of the holes suck (nobody will ever convince me that 12 has any redeeming qualities as a golf hole) and I would never pay $600 to spend six hours on the course, but I do think Pebble has significant architectural merit. It also appears that some changes in a positive direction are afoot, including expanding the 17th green so that it can actually be held, and restoring the 10th tee to the right of the 9th green, bringing back the cape-style tee shot across the beach.

Saw an old picture of #7 where the entire green complex was short grass and it looked way more appealing. And also challenging.

Did Mackenzie's bunkering make the 8th hole worse?

Did Mackenzie's bunkering make the 8th hole worse? Maybe! Judging from all the people standing next to the original green, it looks like there was a knoll short left that could be used to deflect a shot onto the green. The bunkering kind of appears to turn it into an all-or-nothing shot.
