Hi everyone
I can see some of the threads here get less attention; i'm sure known designers are more eagerly followed, which i get...But still thought i'd give this WIP stuff a go, always good to write down ideas for one, and if even one person shows interest and gives me some ideas/feedback, then it's been worth it!
Finished my first course a while back. There's loads of stuff i like about it, but realised even while making that i wasn't going to be completely satisfied with it. Then when seeing the outstadning quality of courses in the WC of design, I realised how far off being where i want to be i am. I got some constructive criticism from a more experienced designer, but in general just felt a bit discouraged. Didn't feel as good about my first attempt. It defo is daunting trying to make a genuinely "good" course.
I've been enjoying playing loads, trying all the courses mentioned in threads, started Q school etc, and just in the last few days, started feeling the bug to get back into the desginer!
So i loaded up my "test" course, and feeling like it might become my second course!
It's a scottish Island course. The work I've done so far is basically to make a mountainous area in one corner of the island where the start (and end) of the course is. I have a clubhouse by the sea, with a little dock area for boats to bring golfers over from the mainland. There's a sea plane as well!
I've got 4 holes routed- hole 1 starts by the clubhouse and goes to the foot of the mountainous area. You then play up into a valley between the mountians for hole 2, back across the valley for hole 3, and hole 4 is the one i have done most work on so far; it's a hole i've had in my mind for a while. After 3, you go through between two mountains right to the edge, where there are cliffs going down to the sea. Your view is sea to the left, mountain to the right, and you play down to a green (par 3.)
My plan from there is to go out from the mountains, to a classic exposed links course for a stretch, then inland to a more treed area for a stretch, then back out from the trees to the edge of the island for a links stretch again and back round to the clubhouse. I've got a rough idea for 18, a spectacular finish having to play onto a small island and back to mainland.
I'm on PS4 and have no idea how to do screenshots! I can take some with my phone if anyone's interested. Won't look great, but just to see layout and progress should anyone want to see how it's progressing.

I'll be watching your thread for sure . Good luck my friend. As for screenshots, you can take them using the share button next your dpad. What I do is share them to Facebook, then download them from there onto my phone. Next go to an image hosting site, imgbb is an easy one, upload the image and link to it on the forum. Yes it's a bit tedious but worth it if you're looking for feedback on a work in progress.

OK, here's my first attempt at uploading screenshots! Course has a name now too; Muirhead Isle
Showing the mountain area and routing for first 4 holes, and my 4th hole, which will be a signature hole on the course. Normally like to leave signature holes to later, but always good to start with a bang too. Pic taken from back tees, can see forward tees up ahead. I'm going quite bold, and using rough for the tee boxes. I quite like using green or fairway for tee boxes, it looks smart, but at the same time almost a bit "gaudy," a bit too much, if that makes sense? Especially for a rough and ready highland course. Rough still stands out from the rest of the surrounds, for me, and hitting from light rough WITH a tee won't affect your shot at all. But do tell me if anyone thinks that's "vulgar" or anything... (can i embed the pics without having to use links?)

Does using light rough on your tees affect club selection? It's just that when I move my tee box slider down to zero and just have base terrain it will automatically give you a wood or iron. I was wondering if it would do the same but maybe not to the same extent with light rough.

Not sure exactly what you're asking? I have my tea box slider on zero because i don't want to auto-generate holes. Not sure about club selection, as i only have a par 3 nearing completion so far and it's selecting the correct club for the length. The lie is 100% though...

I normally put my tees down with zero tee box so the tees sit on the base terrain with 100% lie. I do that so I can test my tee position first without placing a surface for the tee box then having to move both if im not happy with it. My fairway would be over 300 yards but it will automatically give me a wood or iron, I think it's just a bug and maybe something to keep an eye out for.

yeah, you're right, it's making you take iron off the tee, just checked on my par 4. damn, that's really annoying, i really don't love the look of fairway or green for tee boxes, and defo not on this theme also, the fact default tee colour on new holes is your short tee really bugs; small thing i know, just getting annoyed by everything today, haha. VERY slow progress today, but made progress nonetheless. Added a nice mountain lake feature in between two mountains and holes 2 and 3.

First update in a while, and I'm still on 4 holes! Haha...
One issue I have, due to work and girlfriend commitments, is that I can never a proper obsessive session on it; I've also been playing a lot, rather than designing, recently.
But I have done some good stuff last couple of days though.
Went from only tee and green position decided to almost done on hole 3 and made a real nice light/fog/haze change. Made some improvements on 1 too. And practiced some new techniques.
That's about it as far an update goes! This course is going to take a VERY long time. (Looking forward to routing out a new section of holes soon!)

I'm pretty sure it's dependent on where you put your first waypoint for the hole. For longer holes, make sure the waypoint is out at least 280 from tee and it should default to the driver.. BTW, I just started my own thread for my first course design... Good luck all, happy plotting!

Nah, haha, I've pottered about a bit last few days after some "designers block," no long sessions, and enjoyed it; mostly macro stuff. Almost using it as a practice course, but do intend to publish.
I really like the effect that weird brush on page 3 that kinda looks like a facehugger from alien has. Great for making flat hilly/mountainous areas look more rugged and realistic.
God knows when I'll finish this, with the minimal work I'm doing. Also coming to terms with the fact I'm not gonna feel satisfied with it and that I'm struggling to make my courses look realistic. I think I do really nice bits on each hole, but there are bits left over that stand out as unfinished or unrealistic that I don't know how to resolve. Also often not much "flow" between holes.
I'm making it sound worse than it is. I genuinely can see progress and that I'm learning the tools, and I often do find some flow, but I have REALLY high aims and it still seems so far off...
Oh well, I'm not giving up!
