Hey guys, Quick question about how you go about your designing when it comes to lighting. Do you choose the lighting then go about your designing; or, do you design your course then figure out the lighting there? Perhaps a combination? What do you find works best for you?

It seems kind of ridiculous but I choose the orientation the lighting first and try to limit the number of holes with sun from behind. I hate the look of a hole with sun from behind. Flattens and washes everything out. After I get a routing I might tweak it a bit.

I make my final lighting decisions right before publishing. I will try to design the entire course with the lighting the way I want it, but sometimes that's not possible. It's a tricky business. You want holes into the sun because that makes the hole look better, but players don't like playing directly into the sun (especially putting). At the end of the day, it's unavoidable to have a few holes into the sun. I like to choose a signature hole or really cool-looking hole and do the lighting to make that hole look great. Then the rest of it is what it is.

Yeah there's always your favorite part of the course and I try to make that all it can be, then spend a lot of time trying not to let the lighting ruin everything else. Sometimes this is sculpting a mountain to cast a shadow, using trees/buildings for the same purpose but in general you just route your course to avoid the washing out. You should definitely start considering lighting very early in your course, after a few holes or so

Lighting wasn't always the first thing I did...but it is now. With how different the course looks going into/away from the sun, I always want to make sure the good views are there on the right holes. With the lighting set at the start, you can ensure every bit of sculpting you do helps make your course look the best. Plus it helps ensure that I keep my greens mostly shadow-free in the end.
