Hoback Range Sports Club vs. Old Henry’s Shipyard GC
JUDGE 1
Hoback:
Has some great playability with some solid views and a good look to it that will keep people coming back. Solid planting although the retaining walls were very sloppy with the bridges used on the one side. Just looked out of place but overall a solid job!
Old Henry’s:
Had a great northwest links to it with a lot of options off the tee. Great playability and great views. Although it wasn't as clean as Hoback, I really enjoyed all the different options to play your shots off the tee. This course really made me come back a lot more because of it.
The scores were really close, but because of the variety of shots…
The winner: Old Henry's

Nash Summit Golf Club vs. Paradise Island
JUDGE 1
Nash Summit:
It’s a solid golf course design that just needed more work. Lots of missed opportunities to really make things look good. The choice of lighting really didn’t help the designer either.
Paradise:
Mostly technically sound. Nice playability. Weird critique, but when i see the name "paradise" this was not what i was expecting. The lighting and textures were kind of drab (not saying its bad) just not what id think of playing on "island in Paradise".
Winner: Paradise Island

Hoback Range Sports Club
Absolutely incredible course! Realistic yet you took risks and they paid off. Visually outstanding. Extremely playable yet thought-provoking. Super clean. Honestly, the biggest drawback I can even come up with is how some of the tributaries flow in your river. Watch your green sizes, too. Tough course to beat!
Nash Summit Golf Club
Felt like I was playing a Golden Age New England course with Banff influences, not just the location, but the design itself too. There a ton of really cool ideas, and most of them are done very well…. I say most… The double green on 6 and 9 left a bad taste in mouth. 17 feels crammed in with the 18 tees right where the drives land. 18 fairway might not be reachable with a strong headwind. Green sizes were too big at times. 13-16 is a great set of holes! Superb rockwork, tunnel, and clubhouse area overall.
Hoback Range Sports Club wins.
JUDGE 2
Hoback:
A course that will certainly catch your eye on almost every tee, and then makes you buckle down and think about how much you want to bite off. I thought the lighting and sculpting both on the course and off is top-notch here. REALLY hard to find faults. Could have maybe had a bit more excitement in the round, but other than that, I had fun and wanted to play again.
Nash Summit:
A very solid course, plenty of options and some really exciting green sculpting. I thought this course was a joy to play, though I didn't have many moments where I had my breath taken away (#15 was one of them though. A damn nice hole.). I am impressed with some great rock planting along the shorelines and otherwise...but the planting fell a bit short for me in the end. The course was screaming out for a bit more underbrush, or mulch maybe? Something to bring a different look into the frame. Some good sculpting though, I thought there were plenty of nice lighting showcases and fun terrain to use for golf purposes too.
Winner: Hoback
Hoback barely has any missteps and is complete from top to bottom. Nash just misses hitting that spot.
Old Henry’s Shipyard GC vs. Paradise Island
JUDGE 1
Old Henry:
Pros: Everything is really nice, placed well, scuplting, lighting, design - everything good. The cart path frames everything beautifully (and nicely placed to use it to assist on the 625yd par 5!) The 'waves' crashing on rocks were a nice touch. Like the shipyard, and the lighthouse being logically placed. This is a real dark horse to go all the way IMO. Cons: A couple of slopey tees and a couple of bunker sculpting issues. Minimal risk on the short par 4's - no reason NOT to go F/F driver to reach. The cart path just stops on the par 5 12th!
Paradise Island:
Pros: A solid course. Nice rockwork on 18. Cons: 16 out of 18 tees were not flat. Variable width semi-rough, and wavy edges. The brushwork on the heavy rough (Against the natural terrain) was clumsy. Many HUGE bunkers - no reason for them, and several placed illogically. A par 4 at 563yards - really? The beach was a nice idea - but had no character - just flat and empty. The fairways are way too wide - a hole like 18 could have been seriously memorable if it was half the width off the tee (or less!)
Winner: Old Henry's Shipyard
JUDGE 2
Old Henry’s Shipyard:
Absolutely gorgeous views, from every vantage point on the course. Sightlines are key. Flowing along the rugged coastlines, where beautiful rockwork dominates, and misty spray from the waves adds a unique element of realism and atmosphere to the waterside holes. Beautifully-sculpted greens – expansive, undulating, challenging, and penalizing errant approaches. Lots of options on routings, with frequent multiple fairways that offer risk/reward choices. Incredible hole-framing, and planting is lush and varied and adds to the immersiveness of this seaside course. The combination of aesthetic beauty and realistic environment, with strategic playability and the thoughtfulness that went into every detail of the design, makes for endless replayability, and both challenging as well as enjoyable rounds of golf.
Paradise Island:
Well thought-out, cleverly-routed course that plays along the shore, offering lots of shot choices. Very well-done fairway and green designs, nicely contoured and sculpted. The golfer is presented with different ways to approach the greens in many cases, depending on conditions, and distances from the tee and fairways have been very well-planned, resulting in thought having to be given on almost every shot as to the proper club and shot. A thinking golfer’s course. Planting is almost entirely absent, the designer relying on the natural beauty of the surrounding sea, trees, and the course itself to speak for itself. On #3, heavy rough texture looks “sprayed on” around the green, patchy in places, and doesn’t blend well with the surrounding terrain. Ditto #5 around tee-boxes and a few other places. Nice rockwork and a great-looking beach on #7 (and #9), as well as one of the more memorable holes on the course with the split fairway at an ocean inlet and an approach to an elevated green for a long par 4. Bunkers are well-done, strategically-placed, with some unusual and stand-out shapes, such as the fairway “fingers” on #9, and the large rock-topped one on #10 as good examples – they are a signature design element on this course. Greens are on the forgiving side, although well-sculpted, and the course appears to be targeted towards players of average skill. Overall, this is a course that plays very well and does a good job of conveying the environment the designer intended.

Hoback Range Sports Club vs. Paradise Island
JUDGE 1
Hoback Range Sports Club
One of my absolute favorites in TGC1 was Fossmill designed by MikeMike. Hoback reminds me somewhat of that course. It's probably one of the most unique courses I've ever played and boy is it good!
It would be easy to talk about the look of this course, but I'd rather talk about how it plays and especially the greens. They are consistent and always interesting. Not overly adventurous in terms of slopes, but there is a clear strategy to each of these greens and its pinsets. This is a course that even without a lot of elevation changes and bold contours makes for a very interesting course. In fact. I would argue that even if you removed everything visual this would still be a fantastic experience.
I can't give this designer much in terms of developmental feedback so I'll just throw in that I absolutely hate the waterfall you see at the clubhouse and I'm not a huge fan of the retaining walls. I think the waterfall is totally unnecessary and I would have preferred something with a more rustic feel to the retaining walls. Favorite Hole #17
Paradise Island
Paradise Island is the only course I actively had too look up the designer before I played it. I had to make sure I played the correct course. The name of the course summarize the feeling I got when I played it. It felt like it was just another course. Nothing stood out as very good or for that matter very bad.
Technically this is a very sound course. It plays very realistic for the most part and the execution in general is excellent. I felt content while playing, but I ended up playing on autopilot at times. I really wish there were something that grabbed my attention a bit more throughout the round.
I feel I rarely had to think about my strategy navigating my way through the course. My only concern is to swing straight and it often left me a tad uninspired. It's difficult for me to put my finger on it. When I try to judge this course it scores very very well, but I'm just not feeling it. Favorite Hole #6
Summary: Paradise Island is surely a course that can challenge for advancement in this group (though I haven't played the other two), but in Hoback it meets a course that is probably just a little bit better in every category and thus taking a fairly clear victory in my book.
Winner: Hoback
JUDGE 2
Hoback Range:
Solid opening hole.. always like a good first impression. Great use of the creek on the course.... frames holes nicely. Loved the texture choices throughout. 5th is a nice design.. can see myself trying each side of that fairway. Only negative for me was I found myself at the base of one of the retaining walls.
Overall, I think this course has a lot going for it, and I think it might contend in the contest. I'll be interested to see how others score it.
Paradise Island:
Definitely fits the picture I had in my mind based on it's name. 3 par 4's over 515 yards? Including one at 563? assuming publishing error on that one.. but still some long holes. Really liked how the last few holes looked and played. A Solid effort.. I think it's outmatched in this particular effort, but still strong nonetheless.
Winner: Hoback

JUDGE 1
Old Henry’s Shipyard:
Split fairway on 6 doesn’t come into play for master clubs, and i really wish it would have, because the angle matters...but driving over the bunker takes the importance away. Lots of I dare you to….fast/fast OR ride the wind OR challenge the slope OR choose a fairway side….really fun. Sometimes the risk/reward choices have too little risk (15 and 17). Appropriately planted. Nice theming with the harbor and clubhouse style. Very solid but doesn’t take many risks, no WOW holes - conventional..no memorable holes. Bunker sculpting is smooth but is often flat, lifeless and feels unfinished. Signature skill: Hole concepts and design. Signature Hole: 15
Nash Summit:
Double green for 6 and 9 might be a little too tight for a double green. Bunkers are a little blobby/bathtubby. Nice rockwork. Nice rocky river. 14 and 15 seem weaker designs than the rest of the course. Some really good choices on holes, mistakes were not unfairly punished. Could have used more planting for pop. Signature skill: Bunker placement. Signature Hole: 13
