Bah. Have a crap sketch instead Didn't like my previous 3rd hole as it was too straight and just a 'hit it here' kind of hole. Instead, something like the below will be my 125ft downhill hole - either play left, safer but leaving a longer approach, although maybe with a better angle, or try to carry the as yet to be determined 'death' to hit the motorway downhill fairway and hit an iron in to the green. Sketching something out from scratch helps me develop the idea, options and bunker placement. I try not to let it get too 'perfect' - partly because I can't draw that well..., partly because I'll see what the designer throws up that I can incorporate. Should be more fun than the previous hole though (for comparison below) Previous hole (very WIP with just placeholder shape bunkers)

No wonder the courses on here are stunning when you see what you guys sketch! Don't know if anyone else has this problem but individual hole ideas then need to be blended into a whole layout which is straight forward UNTIL you factor in routing. I've just started my second course and in future i'll sketch out a full 18 before starting on the designer. Also, i use a PS4 and therefore can't get that helicopter view of other peoples courses but i presume everyone creates a routed course rather that 18 individual holes ?

Also, i use a PS4 and therefore can't get that helicopter view of other peoples courses but i presume everyone creates a routed course rather that 18 individual holes ? I actually start with my routing really early. I'll tend to have a few ideas for holes I absolutely want to feature, then draw a few routings and pick the one I think has the most potential. For my current course, I had clear ideas for the general routing and holes 1, 2 and 9, but not much beyond that. First routing was below: I then thought that gave me too many holes in the same sort of direction and felt I could tweak the back nine for sightlines. I wasn't really feeling the plot throwing me ideas for a number of holes. Second version gave me the below. As I went, I checked off what type of hole they were, doglegs/wind direction and other bits to ensure variety. In actual fact, very little has changed from this - 1 isn't as much of a dogleg, I've changed the angle on 13 and totally moved 15, but not much beyond that. From there, I'll get ideas of how the holes might play, draw them out to work out hazards and then hit the designer to see how it matches up there. My sketches are very much for plotting purposes rather than beauty

Yeah, take out the numbers and writing and that is something my 3 year old does at nursery.

I kind of like this sketch. Super diagrammatic but deals with the macro scale elements. No wonder the courses on here are stunning when you see what you guys sketch! Hey, if I don't respond, who else will make Dylan look good...
Oh, wait.

Absolutely, a stretch to call mine a sketch but a doodle is doable
