Now that my Oakland Hills South is wrapped up I have decided to try to finish up my Pine Valley project.
I originally mapped this out back in TGC1 and never did anything beyond laying out the waste areas, walking paths, tees, fw, greens & bunkers. Since I mapped the course out it has been renovated IRL to add some championship tees and modify/add bunkering/waste areas on a hand full of holes. Also trees have been removed to open up views across the course and create some great infinity green views.
The course is very tight, with adjacent holes in close proximity as the course winds through various ridges and valley's. The elevation is very dramatic, more so than people realize, it has "Augusta" like elevation change on many holes, forcing awkward shots from uneven lies. The overall elevation change across the course may only be 80-90' but a vast majority of that elevation occurs over very short distances. The greens are also very severe, often times aiming a putt 90° from the hole.
I have lots of good info on this historic course. There are plenty of Top 100 blog play throughs, pictures galore, hole-by-hole flyover vids, a very good Links04 version and of course Google Maps data for elevation data.
Some of the original mapping I did back in TGC1
I've now added the appropriate new tees and all of the bunkering/waste areas as most recently updated on Google Earth. I've also torn up all of the old hideous looking brush shape fairways & greens and have replaced them with splines. The various walking paths throughout the course have been added using a path texture to simulate the hard sand paths...... I have the rough elevation done for most of the course, just need to start fine tuning each hole and work on sculpting.

I got to walk the course last fall and you're right about the elevation changes. Three memorable examples: 1) The second green is insanely elevated; 2) the old championship tee on 18 (not the new back one) is also extremely elevated; 3) the 15th green is basically a fortress--if you miss short right you must be 10-15 feet below the putting surface. It felt like every green had at least one miss that was absolute death (usually in the form of a steep drop-off). Also, the slope in the third green needs to be seen to be believed--pics don't do it justice!

I think Augusta's elevation change is 175' Highest point is #1 green and lowest is #12. The tenth hole alone drops more than the Statue of Liberty: 110'

Yep I have the high to low as 174' at Augusta (front of creek on 12 to 2nd tee), but that spans almost 1,300 yards. The 10th is the most severe with -110' over 440 yards, which is insanely dramatic.
PV has many areas that cover 50'+ over 300 yards, it's a bit different than Augusta since it also plays much shorter (7200 max compared to 7400). Just the way the land moves and creates those awkward lie shots (9th approach at Augusta or layup on 15th for example), forced to play shots off severe slopes into contoured greens.

That's awesome that you got to walk it, I would love to attend the Crump Cup this fall so I can see it for myself.
Here's my roughed in 2nd hole going up the mountain.

Quick update: I have most of the first 10 holes rough elevated and sculpted, to a point where the course is beginning to look like an actual golf course. I won't do any detailed sculpting until I have all 18 roughed in but here's a WIP pic of the Devil's a##!0#l on the 10th.

Almost finally starting to look like a golf course at least. Couple pics from the 2nd.
2nd green overlooking the 3rd hole and 4th tee.

So in lieu of HBs moronic and utterly insulting decision to treat their designers & user base like pure worthless trash by censoring OUR OWN CONTENT I've decided to discontinue my in progress RCR of Pine Valley.....instead I'm taking the work I've done and turning it into an "inspired by" design, that way HB Shauna can't steal my hard work without even the courtesy of a warning/response. The layout is accurate to the real course, bunkers, fw's greens, etc will all remain in tact. I've played the latest lidar version of PV and was left unimpressed (as most lidar courses do, they all feel like a rushed 75% complete version IMO), the trees felt entirely too large and the course felt overly claustrophobic, but it did allow me to capture some nice general elevation information from tee-to approach-to green. I am going to finish this up taking some liberties in elevation, sculpting and planting. The greens I intend to keep as close to real life as possible, I'll just be naming the course something unique so HB can't steal my work.
Fortunately I was able to acquire actual green break data for all 18 holes, so this will really aid in creating a set of realistic greens.
approach view into 11th green:

Hey Royce wondering how you’re doing with your progress in this course... just wanted to know how it was going!

Hey Royce wondering how you’re doing with your progress in this course... just wanted to know how it was going! I’ve been busy with real life the past few months and haven’t been able to commit any free time to this project, but I hope to find some time to finish it up before spring time. HB ruined the desire to build courses for me by being typical HB twats and censoring my Augusta National, with not even a warning.

I feel so much for you because of the insane amount of work you put into Augusta. Was definitely one THE BEST in the game, and though the ************* version is still ridiculously incredible, we all wish you'd have not only the freedom to display the name of the course, but at least some communication with HB. Such a shame they censored it without even telling you. I don't know what I'd do with myself if I was in your position -- you've handled this all really well. I'm looking forward to your Pine Valley. Take your time, there is no rush at all. I hope you find as much fun designing your courses as I have playing them. Thank you for your tremendous contributions to this whole community... so thankful for you!

At the end of the day I don't care that HB decided to censor the course name, the truly disheartening part if it is they gave no warning and have essentially stole my course out from under me (I can't edit any of the previously published versions because of their idiocy).
hb shaun is the true definition of a mop-end. HB has treated their customers like trash time & time again, and the sad fact is they drove this potentially great franchise into the ground by their own doings. Perhaps some day they will wake up over at HB....but I'm not holding my breath, they killed this franchise without even the respect of a quick death lmao. Total fools over there in hb land.
