Hey guys,
I’m breaking ground on an RCR project that I really want to do and it’s going pretty well so far! It’s of a (somewhat) local course that closed in 2014 but was one of my favorites to play before then. However... it’s only some 6900 yards and many holes would just be too easy for how this game plays.
So, my idea was to create the course as accurately as possible, release it, then add tournament tees and make adjustments for a more TGC suitable course. The reason I want the original, though, is because I think it would be awesome to play that and feel as if I’ve gone back in time and am playing it again.
Basically, I’m just wondering a few things: 1) Would people play both versions, assuming I publish a smooth rendition of the course? 2) Would I be wasting my time with a tournament version?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts!
(P.S. mods if this thread would be better on the under construction board feel free to move it)

I wouldn't worry too much about a tournament version. If it's a good design then it will be an enjoyable play for most at 6900 yards, even if it doesn't ever see the PGA Tour. If you do want to make a second version specifically for TGC playability, though, I wouldn't get too caught up on length. I've found the best experiences to come from interesting and challenging greens, and good variety in hole length among each par level (a Short par 3 and brutally long par 3, for example).

I love playing courses that are under 7000yds because they usually have a good variety of hole distances. Like Craig said, if you're aiming for it to host on TGCT, then maybe you should crack on with some extra tee's but it isn't necessarily always about length (as Merion has proved) you could just as easily make the course more challenging by moving tee's so that they give players more angular tee shots, spruce up your greens with more interesting and challenging complexes and add in a few bunker here and there to get people thinking from the tee. Look forward to seeing the end result.

When I made Pebble Creek I added back tees to add some distance. The 3rd set of tees are the real course back tees, just plays too easy on those tees with master clubs at its original length. So if you are looking to add some play ability there is no shame adding 10 to 20 yards per hole for a back tee if there is room.

I guess it comes down to how does it play IRL. Are there holes where 3-wood is the best option off the tee. Are there deceptive runouts, does it consist of several heroic or strategic holes, does it have some tricky uphill/downhill, short par-3s. All of those can quickly lengthen a 6900 yard course, not by numbers, but by forcing the player to a position or forcing them into less of a club.
