Two things I have yet to figure out:
1.) What is the purpose of the red sculpting tool and when or why would I use it? It seems to do nothing.
2.) What does the detach bunker option do? I've clicked on it just to see what happens and don't see anything changing.
Thanks.....

"Detatch Bunker" is used to separate auto-generated bunkers into their individual shapes.
The SCULPT tool (red brushes) modifies the default terrain. Once you start landscaping, whatever you do with the blue brush supersedes the default terrain. Whenever I start a new course, I use SCULPT to raise areas of land where there is water so that there is no water on the course. Then I use LANDSCAPE tools to lower land to make lakes and rivers.
The important thing to know is this: if the default terrain is below the water table (0 elevation), then you cannot place a fairway or green surface brush (I believe that filled splines are an exception) on that land. While this seems like a bug and can sometimes cause confusion, it can actually be very useful.

If you're new in the designer, 99% of what you'll want to do (and be able to do more or less successfully) will involve the blue brushes. Patrick's 100% right, but until you really get the hang of things, the red brushes do have the potential to cause frustration. There was a really good thread on red/blue brushes quite a while ago... tgctours.proboards.com/thread/14198/scult-landscape?page=1&scrollTo=309751.
