Nice, yeah I liked the range setting from what I saw on twitch, it's not ideal in terms of realism imo but it adds some nice variance to shot distance control.
Yeah,I would actually prefer precise distance,as you say everyone has that info IRL.Would be nice to have precise for approach shots but disable elevation info on greens. Also disabling follow cam is a good idea 👍
What could work well, assuming HB never gives us the ability to disable the loft box as an option, would be to switch the scope of 'range' so that it's your club distance that has the variance, rather than the distance to the pin. Golfers know their club distances but they can't nail those distances to the yard every single time. That's where the irl variance lies, in shot distance precision rather than measuring distances.
At the moment, no loft box is the closest to a realistic experience of trying to get close without ever being able to be certain of where it will end up (and yeah no follow cam should be mandatory for a true true sim mode imo!). Range does well with that same objective, where you're genuinely happy with a 15ft birdie opportunity, however from what I saw on twitch it's kinda cancelled out by John saying "looks like 146 yards here" which seems to give you the exact yardage anyway lol

Just thinking out loud, and don't mean to step on any toes or have any idea how this all works, but if there was enough interest in this, would there be any possibility of hosting it here as an additional TST society?
