I was just going through the LinksGems course tour, and I decided to go back in time in Google Earth to see if I could spot the renovations after the article mentioned that the 12th hole received the greatest overhaul by Gil Hanse and George Bahto. There are some decent quality images from the mid- and early-2000's where you can see exactly what they were working with before the renovation. All I can say is that the pre-renovation course is criminal. Seriously, someone should be in jail for what they let happen to that course over the years. Rees @!$#ing Jones happened. Absolute disgrace what he did to the course. The Golfclubatlas.com profile of Sleepy Hollow gives an in depth look at how the restoration brought the course back to its original form. The pictures of the 16th before it was restored, made my stress levels rise. Truly vile. But it was saved in the end. Excellent job by Hansen and Bahto (RIP). The 90's was a pretty dark period for golf course architecture, it seems as though there was a streamlined view of how courses need to be (modernized) and it really destroyed many classics. I have no time for Rees Jones, his courses are linear, aimed only at professional players and have almost no strategic value at all. Amazes me how he makes a living from designing.
