Finally finished, my dear home club. A small club in the Swedish outback - Tobo Golfklubb was built in the 70s with a small budget and to be easily maintained. This means a short course with narrower fairways and smallish greens. There are good eagle opportunities out there for the shotmaker. Greens and fairways are soft and receptive and play very close to the real thing. Plenty of birdies to be had, but hit a crooked one and there may be some real trouble finding a way back to the fairway. Theme: Boreal Par: 72 Length: 6276yds
Built to be as close a replica as possible to the real course - it may play a bit easy for TGC tours, but for its length its no pushover. I am fortunate to hit the ball very similar distances to our dear HB Golfer (wish I had a bit of that consistency as well....), and the course plays very close to the real thing.and leaves the same tactical decisions off the tee. Greens also behave very close to the normal set up of the real course. Work in progress thread here: WIP threadCourse Guide with pictures in post below. There will be a "Club Championship" edition coming with the course firmed up and pin placements in the tricky spots they are usually put... Also will consider any input I get on the course and try to improve it for this update so will wait a while. And - if Mr. Fickett has any potential interest in a "Doyley-proofed" championship edition for the Nordea Masters I already have the back-tees and modifications mapped out in my head... Going to be a monster. PM me.... Enjoy! And if you would take the time to review it on TGC tours and letting me know what you think could be improved I'm grateful! Comments and ratings in this thread extremely welcome as well of course!

Course guideNo 1. 350yds Par 4Inviting opening tee-shot that allows you to start the round with an easy 3 iron if you choose. This is probably the best choice as the fairway becomes a ribbon when it turns right towards the green. Approach is tricky. Downhill into a minimal green. Hit the green and give yourself a good chance to start off with a birdie. No 2. 353yds Par 490 degree dogleg left. Don't be short on the tee-shot! No reason biting off too much of the dogleg as it is a short or mid iron left for the approach anyway. Just make a good iron-swing with a bit of draw and get on with your day. Flag on the left is the hardest placement but still a good birdie opportunity No3. 150yds Par 3.Straightforward par 3 unless flag is put in the back right corner. Another birdie? No. 4. 280yds Par 4This is the first eagle opportunity of the day. Requires mastery of shot shaping and nerves of steel to get there though as disaster is lurking with bad execution. Should be an easy birdie if taking the safe route. No 5. 580yds Par 5Long, tight, uphill par 5. Probably hardest hole on course in real life. In game, another good birdie opportunity if ball is kept in the short stuff. Find the heavy rough off the tee and the hole will show its real face. No 6. 430yds Par 4Downhill with water in front of green. Can be hard to find and commit to the right line off the tee, but a good drive leaves a short iron and another good look at birdie. No 7. 338yds Par 4Short uphill par 4. Green is tricky. Front left pin is the easiest placement, but make sure the wedge is right at the flag as it sits on a ridge. Miss the approach and 3-putt is a real possibility. No. 8. 494yds Par 5Either hit a 3-wood straight down into the fairway or pull out the driver and gamble through the trees on the right for potentially a shorter and flatter second shot. You should easily reach in two with a good tee-shot, but ball is above your feet and everything slopes left so beware. Two good shots and you will have a short uphill putt for eagle. No 9. 358yds Par 440 feet elevation from bottom of fairway to green. You want to hit your approach from as close to the green as possible here, but it's an angled, small target area for the driver or 3 wood. If it is windy, maybe an iron is the better choice as you do not want to be coming out of the rough and lose your distance control for the approach. Beware of the false front, but don't hit it over the green either. Not a good time for one of those 94% shots. No 10. 380yds Par 4Another hole where you have to choose between an easier tee-shot and longer approach or vice versa. Easy green should provide a good look at birdie in either case and even coming out of the rough should be no issue. No 11. 200yds Par 3Longer par 3 where the long and left pin placement is the trickiest. A draw is the preferred shot on this hole. No 12. 312yds Par 4Short downhill par 4 which can be reached if there is the even the slightest tail-wind. Many good attempts end up in the left bunker however... This hole gives up its fair share of eagles and should be a gimme birdie. No 13. 530yds Par 5Shorter par 5. There is a bit more room on the right than what it looks like from the tee. Do not miss left. Good chance to reach in two with a good drive, but make sure to take the slope into consideration unless you want to have a tricky bunker-shot. No 14. 110yds Par 3This is the signature hole of the course, somewhat undeserved of you ask me. Used to be marketed as one of Sweden's most frequent hole in one holes. True or not I don't know. Never made one. If pin is on the small top tier or tucked behind the tree then its a bit of a challenge. When on the back of the green even a half-decent wedge will get close. And yes - that tree is really in that same place in real life. No 15. 315yds Par 4More trees in your way on this short par 4. May look unfair and like a lottery, but there are plenty of ways to navigate the ball safely into the fairway. Most of them involve some sort of slice. Ball will be below your feet for the approach, and the back left pin tucked behind the bunker is a tester. No 16. 335yds Par 4Another short par 4 that is reachable in the right wind. Reaching it will mean taking an unconventional aim off the tee. Otherwise a 5 wood leaves a straightforward pitch. The water-hazard makes this a monster hole for the shorter hitters, but our Mr HB Golfer does not need to worry about that. No 17. 190yds Par 3Small and tiered green on this mid length par 3. Requires a very precise shot to get a makeable birdie putt. No 18. 570yds Par 5A long march back to the club-house. Could be reachable if the wind is right and the drive precise. 3 wood from the tee is not a bad choice. Make sure to hit the approach the right distance. Too short may come back off the green and to long might leave a very interesting putt coming back. This hole does not give up many birdies IRL, but I have a feeling it will in game.

I enjoyed it! Always hard to critique a real course recreation when you know nothing about the real course. Some features that might not work for a fictional course could be essential to making a recreation feel like the real thing. There was the odd fairway on a par 5 early that felt very narrow and a few bunkers that could use some more contouring but again, it could be like that in real life and it's hard to critique when you don't have an idea of the real thing. But the course is fun to play and there are lots of short par 4s where you have the option of trying to get a drive through trees and get on the green or play safe with 5 iron. A couple of longer holes too, mainly par 5s and par 3s that offer a bit of a challenge. It certainly feels like a Swedish course, designed mostly for members. I'll have to go play it this summer and then I can tell you if it's close enough to the real thing. But like I said it's very enjoyable to play and I think you've done a good job!

One mission accomplished then. If it gets anyone to play the real thing it was worth the time! I'll be in Sweden and back around Tobo in early August probably, let me know if you are going!
I did debate 5 with myself a lot. But the way it is reproduces the claustrophobic feeling you will have when you step up on tee or if you choose a wood for your second. Especially if you are used to open courses or have a slice problem.
By the way, that tree-line on the right - anything that way is OB....
Thanks for the feedback!

Played this a second time (loved my first round and favored it) and I just love this course. Wanted to bump this thread back up and encourage everyone to play a round here. Very enjoyable short shot shaping course that requires some thought. It's a shame so many quality fun courses will never reach 200 plays to be handicap rated. We are very lucky to have all these wonderful courses to play.

Scarpacci stopped by in his "Beat the designer" series. The nerve of that guy, trying to stick it to me in my own house... He ends up getting a putting clinic.

Tobo is featuring on the "NO TRAINING WHEELS" tour this week. Happy to welcome the hard core crowd.
This tour plays without assists - and if interested in trying out this way of playing, Tobo might be a good place since it's a short course and greens are quite logical as they are modeled on real life ones.
The course guide will help with club selection.
This will be the second tournament for Tobo after the ProTee Swedish open earlier this month.

Shameless plug and bump, but... Tobo now has a Championship layout that was the host of the Nordea Masters over at TGCTours. I'll just link to the write-up over there below. Be aware, this version has some teeth! Full four days available. tgctours.proboards.com/thread/3193/nordea-masters-tobo-golfklubb-championshipIt got a lot of good comments from the players, including the below from "world number 1" Brionne Beaumont-Thomas: "mcbogga - Dare I say..... This is possibly one of the best courses I've played since TGC came out
Definitely in my top 5"Also - the yellow tees are now up to almost 250 plays. Would be great to get the course handicapped - so if you have not tried it, please do. And - if you like the course I would be really happy if you could take the time to "like" it also in the course listings!

Was joined by PGA regular MellowSwe and master designer MikeMike3000 at the real Tobo Golfklubb this afternoon for 18 holes. Perfect time to resurrect this thread. Some pictures and scores below. Highlight of the day was Mike dropping an 80 footer for birdie on the 5th. Great fun to have these guys come out to play and hear them comparing the real course to the virtual one! courses.swingbyswing.com/rounds/11836014/11554450?utm_source=in-app&utm_medium=share

I put together a small video with some comparisons between the real course and TGC version. Some holes I did better than others. mellowswe and MikeMike3000 are featured - from our round this summer. This is of course partly a way to bump the course a bit, but it would be cool to see something similar for some other RCRs...

Excellent video mate, great idea and a good insight into your recreation.
