Roseland Hills CC vs Burrowing Owl Golf Club I'm not going to do the judge's notes thing on this one as both courses were covered pretty well in round 1, and not much will have changed as far as a critique in round 2. It becomes a case of comparing and contrasting the 2 courses at this point. As pointed out in round 1, both courses are very solid, but both have some issues here and there in the judge's eyes. Both courses have things that the judge's really like, but both also have a few things that make the judge's cringe along the way. That being said, both courses are destined for tour play, but only one is going to advance to the Elite 8... and the winner is... Burrowing Owl Golf Club

El Dorado Hills G & CC vs Brookledge Golf Club Judge #1Brookledge CSU told us specifically that this was too difficult for CC. I think CC pro might be able to use it for a major...but maybe not. Personally I like the tournament atmosphere. Eventually the seats will be filled according to HB_Paul so...I’ll deal with them empty for now. However...having one corner of them float (hole 1) is not a great way to get started. Liberal use of light rough makes this course much more accessible than you’d think. Tight landing zones are abundant...but none of them seem unfair. The spacing for hazards is spot on. Even if the bunkers aren’t tucked up to the fairway or green the sloping brings them into play more and allows for more aggressive contouring into the green edges. Greens are wicked in that if you are above the hole...hold on to your hat. The par threes are a breath of fresh air in the contest. They all move the players focus to the hole instead of being overlarge or with a sprawling view. Hole 5 should be looked at by EVERYONE. THAT is how to do a split fairway on a long hole. Don’t limit the drive in length...limit it to the side...then don’t make the hazard so huge that you have little to no chance of clearing it from a hazard. Yay for common sense! The very next hole DOES take drive away...but the approach shot isn’t 200 yards...so again...common sense. I might have liked to see a little more planting or a little less. Hard to say. I felt like the views could have been better if they were either more enclosed with grass and brush “OR if they were slightly clearer. The balance just felt slightly off. Not a ding...just a personal thing. The course is quality from start to finish. There are holes where the green or the pin locations are going to mean you land in the rough or roll through. There are false fronts that are so close and so steep you’ll put off the surface every other round at least… Yes, it’s difficult...but it’s also a rewarding round. The bunkering is similar throughout...but it works. No chances needed to be taken on this one. It’s championship golf and it makes no apologies. El Dorado The first hole is kind of a microcosm of this course. The brushwork is good, hazard placement is good, things appear to be where they should be...but something feels wrong. It all still seems a little artificial. It's meant to look natural but it doesn't quite pull that off. It absolutely looks like a real world golf hole...but like a golf hole I'd find at a local course that charges maybe $45 bucks with a cart. The bunkers are a really mixed bag with some shapes being pretty standard and others having odd sharp points or little goiters of sand sticking off at odd angles that scare the children away at Halloween. Some of them actually have sand that humps up instead of lying down nicely which I don't understand. There are tee boxes that are separate circles while there are also tee boxes like hole two where it's long and straight but for some reason has a really low key boner (it like...curves upward). There are some nicely planted areas and others that have just some random and I can only assume auto genned rocks sitting around. There are many of the same issues other courses here have had with regard to hiding bunker work more than needed or using fairway surrounds around the green but leaving them flat without any real character or the fact that spacing for green side hazards is simply off on many holes (though not all by any means). Like I said it's a nice course but it's a nice course to play for about $45...not the $150+ type of track the a contest is looking to see produced. Don't get me wrong, this course is nice to play. The green sizes are good and the par threes are particularly enjoyable (at least for me they were save number 11 which was not on the same level as the others). It doesn't get mentioned a ton but I really liked his practice area and pond near the 10th tee. Was just a neat little touch. I know that we aren't judging paths...but please fix the paths. They are kind of squiggly and they keep several ambulance chasers in business. This course will get a spot on tour. There is a lot of good just like I'd expect from DDawg. I know he prides himself on designing a realistic style of course and he has done so too a point. The scenery is nice and the waterfalls and everything are lovely however it still all feels artificial. Realistically artificial as though someone came in and MADE this course...but still artificial. Would love to see the Dawg give himself a big SHOVE and design something he thinks is just too over the top. It might hit the sweet spot. Judge #2
Great choice in the use of light rough here as it kind of makes up for the tight landing areas. Greens are tough and some of the pins are borderline. I thought the use on the PGA was appropriate for this course... one of my favs we've played on tour. Griff:This is another one that I'm not enjoying the process and writeup because it just leaves everybody feeling dissatisfied. Brookledge tee to green is one of the best looking courses in the contest, but it just misses the mark on difficulty here. Had this been the Invicta this may have been a course to watch out for, and we could have given a more thorough head to head analysis on these 2 fine courses...but with the contest being geared towards CC we can't in good conscience consider this one for passing another round. It's sad for us as this would have been a fun matchup to take a crack at otherwise. Dario put out a fantastic course here, and is already a favorite with several of the PGA players. As with Erin, this is no way us saying that Brookledge isn't a fine, fine course...the greens are just too overcooked for CC suitability. Many thanks for the time and effort that went into this, Dario...as always, you gave the community a great course. El Dorado Hills G & CC advances
